Acerca de esta escucha
“I was geared for survival no matter what the cost. Yet, in that worst of worst moments, my fate was sealed. I couldn’t fight my way out. And no amount of ignorance would shield me from what was going to happen to me.”
When Dory is infected with a lethal, engineered virus, his brother, a doctor and researcher, tries to save him. As they bond in a battle to fight the disease, they also try to heal what’s broken in their relationship. While Dory faces a daily battle with death, he also examines a childhood filled with lies, abuse and a father’s hatred. Delving deeper into his fears, he discovers secrets that could restore his faith in himself and also help him to find the peace he longs for. But will any of it matter if he isn’t strong enough to hang on to life?

The connection with his brother Milton, a doctor who is on a mission to save him at any cost, undergoes a transformation. At the beginning of the story Dory views him as a sadistic torturer: “When Milton caught up with me, I made a last plea for freedom, “Get away! Let me die in peace.” But the bond between them is bound to survive as Milton cares for him. “You’re not alone.”
Despite episodes of sheer madness, Dory begins to own some moments of his life. “The enemy is inside of me, but that doesn’t mean that it is me.” By the end, he finds a lighter tone, “When I looked at the Madonna’s eyes, I could almost swear she winked at me.“
Thomas, a figment of Dory’s imagination with whom he has an ongoing conversation, allows him to reflect on each turn in this journey. “So you, who’s really another part of me, is telling me that I can weather this disease.” And as Dory awakens to care for his brother and worry about him, he pleads with Thomas: “Take care of my brother! Help him get through whatever is coming!”
Five stars.
