Electrodomésticos is an elegant yet powerful depiction of the post Spanish Civil War era, where class divisions lay bare those who can afford to eat a decent meal and those who can not. Josu is an inexperienced electrician, tasked with installing an oven in the home of an upper-class Basque couple. He’s completely captivated. But the couple, though they seem to have it all, are in a prison of their own. Mesmerizing in its subtlety and sinister intimations, Electrodomésticos reveals the poverty and loneliness of this era.

About the Creator

Moira McCavana’s first published short story, “No Spanish,” was selected for the 2019 O. Henry Prize Anthology. Her work has appeared in Guernica, Harvard Review, and The London Magazine. She currently lives in Madrid, Spain.

I just don’t know what this was about…or what the point was. Was he a stalker? Did he long to belong to a different family? I just don’t get it.

I believe that in order to understand the story I would have to know more about Spain’s history and the situation with the Vasque population. I also think that a lot was lost in translation as it seems to me the original story was written in Spanish.

The narrator speaks English but the characters speak Spanish. WHY???? Did it say this anywhere???? Useless to non Spanish speakers!

If I were offered $10,000 to do it I could not possibly write a story more inane than this one. It had nothing! What was the point?
