It’s 1931, tens of thousands have been evicted from their homes, breadlines are blocks long, shantytowns are everywhere, and over 200,000 children are homeless. Brianna Quinn, whose husband was killed in a board racing accident and now has her destitute in-laws, Edward and Francis, living with her, keeps the wolf from her door by being a part time cat burglar.
When she learns that Edward’s brother, Brody, an accountant and courier for the private and secretive Whitter Bank, went missing while delivering 500 double eagles to a bank patron, she decides to find out what happened to him.
Her fence, Nico, tells her the police are clueless and the investigation has gotten nowhere. “It was a clean sneak,” he said.
She goes to the Whitter Bank and talks to the manager, Brice Stevenson, who is reluctant to divulge any information. But as the bank wants closure and retribution, and the patrons are getting nervous, he gives her pertinent information regarding Brody’s destination and route.
Stevenson’s information and a talk with Brody’s girlfriend leads to a trip to New Hampshire, resulting in a lethal confrontation, a swim in a quarry, and a chat with Gretchen Eversole, head of the defunct Eversole Underwater Salvage.
As she presses on, Brianna gets acquainted with the Miller Dunn Style Two shallow water diving helmet, with Riley, former rumrunning gun moll, now Whitter Bank receptionist, and the Model 1928 Thompson submachine gun, useful to have in hand when one is romping about in the woods.
