In this installment of the Gallagher family Age of Sail adventures, the world of the Gallagher brothers expands from New Orleans, where the previous novel ended, to include Spanish California, the Pacific northwest, and the Hawaiian Islands. Jack, now “beached” along with many U.S. Naval officers after the War of 1812, signs on as ship captain for J.J. Astor’s fur company. Jack, Eamonn, and their youngest brother Barney meet Kamehameha the Great, help him conquer and unite the Hawaiian Islands, and foil efforts by an interloper who schemes to acquire the Hawaiian Islands for Russia. It is a period after the War of 1812 when great powers turned their attention back to mercantilism, expansion, and in some cases colonialism. The details of Kamehameha’s battles generally follow the historical record, although the date is changed for entertainment purposes. A Russian adventure in the islands also took place between 1816 and 1817 and included the construction of forts on the island of Kauai and promises to the king of Kauai to provide Russian naval assistance to defeat Kamehameha.

Come along for another far-ranging adventure as Jack Gallagher is challenged at a low point in his naval career, Eamonn Gallagher becomes the covert eyes and ears of U.S. government interests, and young Barney Gallagher becomes a man. The Gallaghers help the clever, daring Kamehameha achieve his unification ambitions, bring peace to the islands and set the stage for his people’s enrichment. They also help Kamehameha and American traders spoil the colonial delusions of a dangerous Russian-sponsored empire builder.
