From the best-selling author of The Storm Before the Storm and host of the Revolutions podcast comes the thrilling story of the Marquis de Lafayette’s lifelong quest to defend the principles of liberty and equality.

Few in history can match the revolutionary career of the Marquis de Lafayette. Over 50 incredible years at the heart of the Age of Revolution, he fought courageously on both sides of the Atlantic. He was a soldier, statesman, idealist, philanthropist, and abolitionist.

As a teenager, Lafayette ran away from France to join the American Revolution. Returning home a national hero, he helped launch the French Revolution, eventually spending five years locked in dungeon prisons. After his release, Lafayette sparred with Napoleon, joined an underground conspiracy to overthrow King Louis XVIII, and became an international symbol of liberty. Finally, as a revered elder statesman, he was instrumental in the overthrow of the Bourbon Dynasty in the Revolution of 1830.

From enthusiastic youth to world-weary old age, from the pinnacle of glory to the depths of despair, Lafayette never stopped fighting for the rights of all mankind. His remarkable life is the story of where we come from and an inspiration to defend the ideals he held dear.

Dear Listener,

What drew me to the Marquis de Lafayette?
"While producing the Revolutions podcast series, the Marquis de Lafayette kept showing up over and over again. From his teenage entry into the American Revolution in 1777 all the way through his critical role in the Revolution of 1830 as a 72-year-old, he was an active participant in the most dramatic moments in a pivotal epoch of world history. Biographers and historians tend to focus on his youthful exploits, but once I grasped the breadth and depth of his revolutionary career, I wanted to tell the full story of his almost impossibly eventful life." –Mike Duncan, author of Hero of Two Worlds

Mike Duncan tells an amazing story about one of the most important people in American and French history. The story is well written and keep you listening. Amazingly, it isn't romanticized. It shows that Lafayette's life and choices were not all prefect by modern standards. But his character is extremely strong and regrets difficult choices he would rather have not made. Highly recommend.

I have been waiting this book for some years now. It was worth the wait. I feel it is a good balance of praising and Taking in account the flaws of a man who did a lot in his life and was parting of a movement that change the world.

Mike Duncan is a treasure. His production of the Revolutions podcast introduced many characters that bounced around from place to place in the 18th and 19th century revolutions, but none were so prolific and steadfast as Lafayette. Even without being a fan of the podcast, the book grips you with Lafayette's towering life-story. He is truly a storybook hero in reality, shown here in both his greatest triumphs and lowest defeats. Lafayette has always been one of my favorite historical figures, but Duncan brings him to life like nothing I've ever seen.

I hope we get an HBO series.

Mike Duncan at his Best

Mike Duncan really illuminates the fantastical life and history of Lafayette. A wonderful answer to any who have ever asked "whatever happened to that young French guy from the beginning of US History 1?"

Even having listened to Mike's far more in depth and long journey through the French revolution I learned many things I did not know about the General's involvement, worth a read/listen even if you already have the basic outline of the man's life.

A wonderful tale

We sorely lack politicians with the ideological fortitude and genuine willingness to fight for the liberty of others. Yet the Marquee thought nothing of it and did it in a land far from his home for a group of admitted underdogs, in the face of the greatest military machine the world had seen up to that point in history. Lafayette is now one of my favorite among the figures of our revolution, and I hope others might hear his story and realize how fleeting democracy can be.
Thanks Mr. Duncan, for another prescient book in these troubled times.

His like may never pass this way again...

I started listening to Duncan’s podcasts and am a fan, but this book is his best work yet. I learned about Lafayette, but also so much about the times he lived. I did not expect to get such a deep understanding of the French Revolution, and the effects the American Revolution had in Europe.

A fantastic history
