Acerca de esta escucha

Did you know that as of 2018, Argentina has a literacy level of 99 percent? Are you curious to find out how it achieved this?

Argentina has a long and complex history. For hundreds of years, Argentina was inhabited by hunter-gatherer groups. In time, the Inca Empire rose to prominence and took over the Argentinian communities one by one. The Spanish arrived about 20 years later, bringing a new wave of invasion to the native inhabitants. The people of Argentina wouldn’t declare their independence until 1816, and after that, they faced civil war after civil war.

Although it might seem like Argentina’s history is only compromised of conquest and warfare, it is also filled with fascinating civilizations and influential figures, such as José de San Martín and the less-revered Juan Manuel de Rosas.

While almost everyone knows that Argentina is located in South America, not everyone knows that Argentina’s successful May Revolution inspired other countries in Latin America to rebel. Many may have heard of Juan Perón and his wife, Eva, but not everyone knows about Perón’s third wife, Isabel, and her time as the president of Argentina. This audiobook will take you on a brief journey of Argentina’s past, both its highs and its lows, as you discover a fuller picture of the beautiful nation of Argentina.

In this audiobook, you will learn about:

  • The people groups who lived in the country before European colonization
  • The Spanish conquistadors who made their mark on the country
  • The May Revolution and Argentina’s struggle for independence
  • The immigrants who made Argentina their home and pushed its economy and society to new heights
  • The world wars and how Argentina strove to stay neutral
  • Juan Perón’s time in office
  • The “Dirty War” and the Falkland War

Argentina, once a country with a per capita income on par with the United States has been mired in a multi decade cycle of debt, inflation and default. There is more; however, to Argentina than it’s economic woes.

This Captivating History covers the history of Argentina, it’s people and politics, from pre-Colombian times through the modern day. Prior to the conquest of the Spanish, today’s Argentina was ruled by the mighty Incan civilization. While Spain quickly and brutally conquered the Aztec empire, they conquered the Incas with much more difficulty. This title provides this background, covers the period of Spanish rule, the revolutionary era, formation and dissolution of the Republic, Argentina’s “golden age,” economic depression, Juan Perón, military dictatorship through the modern day (and, more).

As with other Captivating Histories, the content is provided in a concise and interesting manner. Unfortunately, this audiobook had a narrator unable to pronounce the frequent Spanish, and periodic Quechua or German words. While his pace and tone were fair, the seemingly constant mispronunciation made me cringe often enough I had to pause the title and resume it later. For those unable to listen past this, the written version would be a better choice.

A fine history of Argentina, harmed by narrator

History was good, but the man who is reading this was not told how to properly pronounce Spanish names. He butchered the language!

Reader needs to learn how to properly pronounce the Spanish names!

hated lack of correct pronunciation which was compounded by a repetitive rise in tone at the end of every sentence: hokey. I can make my own emotional reaction when needed.

There were so many mispronounced words that is was hard to follow. Current history now included

I was disappointed by the cursory and abbreviated treatment given to 20th century (and 21st) Argentine political, economic, and social history—critical for understanding Argentina today. The book is disproportionately weighted toward pre Colombian and colonial history. Narration, while a clear and earnest voice, mangles pronunciation of names and places in a way that becomes tedious.

Weak on modern Argentina

I can't believe this narrator personally chose to say so many words in such an awkward way... made it hard to concentrate.

Ai narrator?

A decent summation of pre colonial rule, and then two hours of grueling and difficult to follow history of the colonial era. The book surmises the entire 20th century in about 30 minutes! Argentinas modern history, especially the dirty war and the war of the Falkands was almost an afterthought thrown into the last chapter of the book with little to no insight or analysis. A decent book for someone traveling to a Argentina who wants a quick cliff-notes style history lesson. I’ll be looking elsewhere for more on Argentina’s 20h century history.

Inadequate at best

Perhaps I could have enjoyed the history if the narrator’s voice were more human (sounds like a robot!) and if he would stop butchering the Spanish. It was hard to know what he was talking about sometimes because his Spanish pronunciation was so bad. Really? No one who understands Spanish pronunciation was available? Disappointing.

Awful narrator

The story was very comprehensive and well written. I enjoyed the organization of the topics across the entire history.

Nevertheless, I did not really enjoy the performance style of the speaker. He seemed to be surprised in almost every sentence and it was very distracting. Also not very good pronouncing Spanish words.

Very comprehensive history; odd reading

Terrible reader. Hard to make a further judgment beyond that. It was terrible. Mispronunciation of words and on.

I wanted to learn the history, and I basically got that. Albeit in a somewhat boring if not
painful manner.

Not very good…terrible reader.
