Hobbes: Unhuman Series, Books I-IV

I - Inspector Hobbes and the Blood Inspector Hobbes, a monstrous police detective, investigates grave, ghoulish goings-on. A mad pseudo vampire with the dagger of Vlad Tepes is behind robbery, and murder. It is a funny tale with a troll, human sacrifice, blood and great cooking. 'I ought to tell you, dear, he can get rather wild when he's hungry.'

II - Inspector Hobbes and the Curse Andy becomes infatuated with a dangerously beautiful woman during Hobbes's investigations into sheep deaths and the mysterious disappearance of pheasants, which are apparently connected to a rash of big cat sightings; and something horrible seems to be lurking in the woods. 'Love may be on the horizon but, beware; something wicked this way comes.'

III - Inspector Hobbes and the Gold Diggers Unwelcome attention after foiling an armed robbery forces the Inspector away on holiday to the dangerous Blacker Mountains, where his accident-prone friend, Andy, stumbles across something shocking, before falling for an attractive widow. ‘I always knew you’d get ahead one day.’

IV - Inspector Hobbes and the Bones Trouble lies ahead for Andy. Is the apparently charming young woman who attempts to seduce him merely setting him up for blackmail, or is something even more sinister afoot? Hobbes certainly believes so, and, though he's not the sort to worry, he is getting worried. ‘I was grateful for having been born human.’

Like Harry Dresden mixed with Midsomer Murders. Great voice acting, humour and style. Strongly recommend.

A laugh out loud detective mystery that will keep you listening! Martin keeps you guessing until the end. You will fall in love with the quirky characters. I love this series and could listen to Tim Campbell’s superb narration over and over! If you like urban fantasy and mystery this is the series for you.

Hold on to your teeth for a fantastic ride!

I thoroughly enjoyed Books 1-IV. Unusual story line that had me laughing out loud. Great narration, fun characters, and a nice listen. I’m sad I came to the end.

Sad for it to end!

The play on words can be quite funny, if sometimes a bit of a groaner, but who doesn't love an occasional Dad joke?

Thoroughly Enjoyable

I took a chance on this series and I'm glad I did. The stories were excellent. The performance was excellent. Most of the characters were also, (wait for it...) EXCELLENT. I say most because I did have a problem with one character. The lead character, Andy Caplet. Yes, I know, he is the Watson to Hobbes' Holmes. He's also the comedy relief. Unfortunately, I think the author went a little overboard with Mr. Caplet. I did not find his 'antics' funny or humorous. I found Mr. Caplet to be a pathetic, cowardly fool. He needs to be made a bit more mannish and have a least a modicum of common sense. But, if you can overlook, as I did, his stupidity, I really think you'll like these stories.

Excellent all around...well most of the way.

Narration is so PERFECT and the stories vastly entertaining. Individually, I might have wavered between a 4 and a 5, but 40 amazing hours of entertainment for one credit - hands down, Five Stars! After so long with these characters, I'd normally be ready for a break, but all I feel is an abiding sadness that there is no more. Quirky, likable characters, funny and somewhat snarky dialog, and clever, interesting plots - yep, this is a world I could just stay in. If you enjoy urban fantasy, you could think of this as English rural fantasy and when you add the humor, the brilliance of a character like Hobbs, and some great dog action, it's hard to beat! There is plenty of tension in the narrative, but nothing you couldn't enjoy with the whole family and I loved that. After reading this, I think I am in love with Wilkie Martin and major kudos to Tim Campbell's bringing the stories to beautiful life.

A truly marvelous tale with poignantly dry wit, brutally satisfying action, and *real* personality. I honestly can't sing high enough praises, I fell in love with every part of this collection. The story arcs are well-crafted, dialogue never feels boring, and the characters have--well, character! In addition, Tim Campbell delivers a masterful performance. Americans love a British accent, of course, but Campbell's skill is exemplary in remaining unpretentious and relatable. Enjoy with a nice pint of lager.

I found this story hilariously funny. Was chuckling out loud on many occasions. Recommend this as a light hearted book to enjoy.

Inspector Hobbs and Andy

Overall, this is a fun series, well fleshed-out, good humor (Asprin level). Main character is annoying but gets less so as he develops. Performance is good. The only reason for 3 stars is that the 4th book is definitely unnecessary and irritating. He should've stopped at the happy end... :(

1st 3 books very good, 4th is optional
