Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey are unquestionably two of the greatest epic masterpieces in Western literature. Though more than 2,700 years old, their stories of brave heroics, capricious gods, and towering human emotions are vividly timeless.

The Iliad can justly be called the world’s greatest war epic. The terrible and long-drawn-out siege of Troy remains one of the classic campaigns, the heroism and treachery of its combatants unmatched in song and story. Driven by fierce passions and loyalties, men and gods battle to a devastating conclusion.

The Odyssey chronicles the many trials and adventures Odysseus must pass through on his long journey home from the Trojan wars to his beloved wife. Though the stormy god of the ocean has sworn vengeance against him, and witches and sirens try to lure him off course, Odysseus is clever and has the brilliant goddess Athena on his side.

Homer (9th or 8th century B.C.) is the presumed author of the Iliad and the Odyssey, the two greatest epic poems of ancient Greece. Virtually nothing is known about his life. Tradition has it that he was blind. Most scholars believe he composed the Iliad and the Odyssey by relying on oral traditions. Their value lies chiefly in the poetry itself, moving from sublime passages about the gods and heroic exploits to passages expressing deep human emotion.

It was nice to get the entire story instead of bits and pieces. The narrator did an awesome job. The translation really captures the spirit of the tail. 👍👍

Really neat if one takes to the imagination and entertains the ideas concerning the gap between when it was written and now. Add that to the cultural difference and what a story!!!

Great job everyone.

Great adventure.

I never read the Odyssey or the Iliad, other than tv shows or movies I never knew the story quite as well and I now know it after listening to this unabridged version of them both together, back to back. It was easy to follow despite its mixing of the timelines in the Odyssey and enjoyable stories with references to other stories which I remembered reading about when I was a kid. I actually checked some of them out on YouTube and it’s interesting to understand the story correctly. Great to hear it and recommend it, it’s a mythical trip.

Very well presented

It’s tough to review The Iliad and The Odyssey. How an you give a poor rating to a 3,000 year old classic? At it’s heart it’s a riveting story, as is clear by the number of times it’s been retold and made into movies but it has some hurdles for the modern day reader.

1. Every character apparently knows everyone else, friend or foe, and, as they kill their enemies, the killing is described in gory detail (just as much as current movies) while telling the name of the character, his strengths, his family, etc. despite the fact that there is a cast of thousands. In fact, most of the characters are treated this way even though their deaths are the first and last time that we ever encounter them.

2. When a character gives a message to be delivered, the message is told even if it’s pages long and when it is delivered it is repeated verbatim. This happens over and over again. I suspect the size of the book would be cut about 15% if they simply said something like Agamemnon’s message to Achilles was delivered.

3. There is a long section at the beginning where every prince or king that came from Greece to Troy is described, their family history, what they’re known for, who their friends are, how many ships they brought and more. Most of them never are mentioned again. I almost gave up at that point. I suspect that Homer was intending to demonstrate what a large flotilla came. It’s kind of tedious.

4. And servants have Irish accents??? Pleeaase!!!

Still I do admit that, at its heart, it is a great story. I prefer The Odyssey to The Illiad.

How can you give a 3,000 year old classic a bad rating

A fantastic box set! The Illiad is a brilliant and breathtaking depiction of war that is, at times, both horrific and moving, driven along at a relentless pace. Added to this is the fascinating dimension involving the realm of the gods and a host of iconic characters. Homer's masterful story telling continues with The Odyssey which winds back and forwards in time to complete the story of both the Trojan War and the Achaeans survivors journeys home. This is a wonderful and very accessible translation and a truly excellent narration. Definitely a must listen!

Unless you read/listen these two stories, there is no way you can claim you give western literature its due.

A must

Mr. Anthony Heald has astounded me. I have been engaged from the start. I have listened to several audiobooks with overproduced effects and felt underwhelmed almost to distraction. But this read makes the whole room stop to listen.

The best voice actor I have ever heard.

Thank you all for this fantastic presentation of this classic. In all of my 79 years I had never read this classic. As translated and read I cannot imagine it being presented in more enjoyable way. Kudos to the translator and especially the reader for an enjoyable book.
