What happens when a young girl is abruptly taken away from everyone and everything she knows?
When the comforts of a Bayou home are pulled from under the feet of young Rahab Auguste, she must rise above and face the challenges on the streets of the South Bronx. Discovering family secrets withheld from her, Rahab embarks on a journey down a path she never saw coming, with a mother she never knew.
I Am Rahab: A Novel is a coming-of-age tale cleverly depicting the biblical account of Rahab the prostitute before the fall of Jericho, as told through the present day story of Rahab Auguste. This multi-generational fictional story is the first in a three-part series chronicling the life of Rahab as she discovers the truth about life, the pain of death, and the meaning of survival.
Life rotates in cycles, and if you’re not careful you can end up on a road not meant for you to travel. For a young girl plagued by her family's past, her path is just beginning.

This is a wonderfully written coming of age tale of a young girl who is being raised by her grandmother, Lottie "Big Mama", who happens to be involved in voodoo in Louisiana. Rahab is the product of a horrific attack and her mother, Pua, wants nothing to do with her. As Rahab gets older, she attracts the unwanted attention of a pedophile. The author does a great job of horrifying the reader without giving explicit details of the encounter.
When Lottie dies unexpectedly, Rahab's world quickly changes when she is taken to NYC by her mother. I enjoyed the author's descriptions of the bayous of Louisiana and the streets of NYC. These descriptions added a lot to the story.
The book is full of excellent dialogue, hope and despair, and a look into life of a young mixed race girl in the South. The narrator(s) did a great job with the accents and added a lot to my enjoyment of the book. I look forward to continuing Rahab's story in the next book.
