If you have not already had previous experience with the Russian language, then this is not for you as it will befuddle you and probably turn you off the language. It is simply a dictionary of Russian words and phrases read by a Russian woman and an American man who sounds bored to tears. In this course there is no real method to learning Russian; it simply presents the information and its up to you to learn yourself.

If you are starting out, I highly recommend Pimsleur as it starts from basics and actually teaches you the language with a really great method for learning.

However, the great thing about this course is that once you have a good grasp of Russian, it is invaluable in revising and solidifying what you have already learnt, and providing you with tons of new words and phrases that Pimsleur glossed over.

It is a fantastic way to expand you Russian vocabulary, and for like $13, who can say nyet.

I've been using this download and agree that it has been very useful. However I've been attempting to purchase the booklet for over a month, with no success. I call the 800 number and just get a series of voice mail choices. E-mails to Penton Customer Service are not returned. Their web site allows me to purchase the booklet as part of the CD set, but by itself.

What disappointed you about Learn in Your Car: Russian, Level 1?

Lack of booklet and complications of burning to disk.
The booklet that supports Learn In Your Car disks is an extremely convenient and well designed aid to the audio. But converting the downloadable PDF file to booklet format is more expensive in time and effort than the price of the whole program. Originally it was possible to order the booklet from Penton Overseas, but they have been out of business for a long time.
When I burned the download to a disk, the result was 8-minute segments that did not correspond to the natural subject breakdown of the original tracks. And there is a 30 second introduction at the start of track one that no-one would want to hear more than once.
Fortunately I was able to buy a used set of disks on EBay, complete with booklet, at a very good price, but my Audible purchase was a waste of money.

What about the narrator’s performance did you like?

Consistent with other Penton Overseas language tapes. Delivery is well suited to vocabulary building.

It is a must have for starters who want to learn Russian. I recommend it to all expats we get here in our company in Russia. You need to use it on a day to day basis though and it works (but it takes you at least a year + to get all three levels ! + some grammatical support from a teacher). Hence good stuff.

This program is simple memorization of words no logical order, context, grammar or sequencing into useful phrases or sentences.
