Acerca de esta escucha

Joel Miller is an ex-roadie for Guns N’ Roses, Poison, Stone Temple Pilots, and the Cranberries. The book is an often-hilarious personal account of a young man in his early 20s trying to be a “good” roadie while also trying to understand life’s big picture. Through the advice of rock stars and career roadies Joel tries to find the pathway to roadie righteousness.

"I was forced to relive moments I’d intentionally blocked out. Great read!" (Dizzy Reed - Guns N' Roses)

"If you really wanna know what life is like for the roadies, ride on their bus for a day or two. That'll teach ya." (Eric Dover - Slash's Snakepit)

"…it’s played havoc with my circulation as I’ve ended up sat on the loo…reading it for too long at a session and got pins and needles in my legs." (The Moshville Times)

Story was interesting. Got a little boring. The roadie Ranch were kind of stupid wasn’t as good as I thought it was going to be, but it was interesting.

It was ok

What have the people who rated this five stars been listening to? There aren't any real stories about the musicians, unless you count him meeting them and then giving his opinion of them a story. All the stories in the book are about the author. This is basically a memoir about a person I've never heard of and it's not that exciting. it's a shame because it would have been easy to do some research on what was going on in the musician's lives at the time and weave that in with his interactions with them but all it is is him going on and on about things that happened to him on the road. it gets old pretty quick and I just don't see how anyone can call this a good book, unless they were there or know this person personally. I would have at least appreciated hearing about the equipment each band member used. but you get none of that either.

Disappointed

Following the memories of debauchery and what can only be described as premature liver failure, Joel recalls the stories from the road and a bit of the prior history, working in many different roles in the music industry. The back and forth between characters is funny and entertaining, as well as it feels authentic. His stories of grandeur are overpowered by the minutiae of a day in the life, which makes it so much more likable, even if at times he may not have been. Fishing with rockstars, or pretending to be mute to avoid confrontation, he tells what must have been journaled notes from his time sleeping in a bunk or atop a road case. His moments of reflection and self growth, are buried between rants on random topics and humor best left inside the pages, but the way it is done keeps you wanting to continue through the story.
His writing style is similar to Gladwell, Klosterman, and Colvin. His stories are like a back stage version of Tommy Lee’s memoirs, or Ozzy’s memoirs of a mad man. He paints the roadie life without frills and fiction, and instead seems to enjoy some of the suffering he had to endure. His ability to describe a feeling without having to inject that feeling into the reader is very good, and it allows people to form their own opinions of how the moment felt, especially in those where you can picture being there yourself.
His book ends talking about another book, following the next chapters of his life, I truly hope he does write it, as I would enjoy reading it as well.
5 Stars.

Behind all the glitz and glam, there’s Rifkin

My feeling about the book and Joel are probably similar to how many others have felt about him and begs the question, why do I find this outwardly unlikable guy, kind of likeable?

Not the worst book ever;)

I hope he writes another book. The stories kept coming and I want more! What a way to grow up... on the road with STP and Guns N' Roses... really was good!

Very good! If you need a break from the monotony of your life, I definitely recommend a listen, especially if you are a Gen X or early Millennial.

Great listen!

Immensely interesting. Listening at my shop and feels like having a friend here telling me stories. Narration is not dull, he gives the stories life.
