Acerca de esta escucha

In the first book of the Jocelyn O'Roarke series, when a Broadway show’s lead actress is murdered, her understudy must race to find the killer before it’s too late. Struggling actress Jocelyn "Josh" O’Roarke just got a real offer. Well, something resembling a real offer. Her old friend Austin Frost has written a play for Broadway and cast the glamorous Harriet Weldon as the lead. Not wishing to leave his old friend Josh behind, he has invited her to be Harriet’s understudy.

The role of understudy is a difficult one - and it becomes even more so when Harriet turns up dead and the police name Josh their prime suspect. With the NYPD breathing down her neck, Josh must find the people responsible while ensuring that the show will go on.

Murder on Cue is the first book of the Jocelyn O’Roarke mystery series, which also includes First Hit of the Season and Death Mask.

Story - ok
Narration - awful. Stiff, monotone, boring.
Could not finish narration is sooooooo bad. Characters uninteresting and predictable.

I really enjoyed this book and looking for to the next one. I found the narrator very good and would listen to her read again.

Great book

Last bit of the story was good. Reader sounded like she was just reading.

Slow to get going

Loved the story. Very engaging, with a lovely plot twist at the end.

The reader, however, should either read it in one voice, or develop a wider range. The two main characters, Jocelyn and Phillip, are barely discernable from one another. This made for a bit of confusion at times, but did not detract too much from my enjoyment of the story.

Looking forward to reading the series

There should be a rule that authors may not read their own works. This book would have so much better if the author would have spent the money to hire a professional reader.

Where does Murder on Cue rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I cannot rank all the books I have listened to, as it would be comparing apples to oranges. In the genre of cozy mysteries, I would rank this quite high.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

As I lived in NYC, in close proximity to the sight of Jocelyn's apartment, this was much about nostalgia. I can attest that her descriptions and sense of place are spot on. Also, I love that Jocelyn is a smart character, not some lame stereotypical woman.

What does Jane Dentinger bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I think she reads her own prose very well. I was engaged and have since purchased two more in the series.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, not that sort of book. It was a gentle, sweet read. I read it in two days. `

Any additional comments?

I am very happy that Audible has made this series from the 80s/early 90s available on audible format. Now, get me Barbara Pym!
I think that this Jane Dentinger series is pretty much timeless. The author's wit and dry humor resonate. She is a compelling character and good read. Bravo!

A welcome entry into the charmed NYC theatre world

wonderful

I enjoyed the mystery, but will probably read instead of listen to the rest of the series. The narrator was adequate but not great. Unless an author is also an actor, recording your own work is seldom a good idea. The story is good, and needed a better presenter to do it justice. Although written in the 80s, the book has held up well over time. Only time I really noticed it’s age was an airport scene when a non-passenger was able to go to the gate with traveler. I remember those days - it was nice.

Good story

The book was well written and displayed great vocabulary without sounding like the author was trying too hard. The resolution of the mystery was clever. The production suffered from the author reading her own work. She's as good as a mediocre voice actor but it could have been enjoyable to listen to instead of just suffering through. One point I couldn't get past was having a main character that is a smoker AND has an unusually keen sense of smell-- unbelievable. I'm out.

good story, poor performance

I thought that having the author narrate her own book would bring it to life. I was wrong. she stumbled over words and was a very full storyteller, but she wrote a compelling story. I enjoyed it more when I turned up the speed. She has a very flat delivery. I will not be continuing with the series via audiobook.

I thought wrong....
