In this sweeping novel, James A. Michener chronicles eight tumultuous centuries as three Polish families live out their destinies. The Counts Lubonski, the petty nobles Bukowksi, and the peasants Buk are at times fiercely united, at others tragically divided. With an inspiring tradition of resistance to brutal invaders, from the barbarians to the Nazis, and a heritage of pride that burns through eras of romantic passion and courageous solidarity, their common story reaches a breathtaking culmination in the historic showdown between the ruthless Communists and rebellious farmers of the modern age. Like the heroic land that is its subject, Poland teems with vivid events, unforgettable characters, and the unfolding drama of an entire nation.

Reseñas editoriales

"Stunning.... An unmatched overview of Polish history.... The families themselves come very much alive, and through them, Poland itself." ( USA Today)

Reseñas de la Crítica

"Engrossing.... A page-turner in the grand Michener tradition." ( The Washington Post)
"A Michener epic is far more than a bedtime reader, it's an experience. Poland is a monumental effort, a magnificent guide to a better understanding of the country's tribulations." ( Chicago Tribune)

I am of Polish ancestry but was aware of just small bits of Poland's history. This book taught me so much and has prompted me to learn more.

What an Engrossing Epic!

I say gripping because the story is unforgettable. I say tedious because so much of Poland’s history repeats itself in hope and hopelessness. They are a resilient, stubborn, courageous and colorful people.

Much like with travel, you cannot get into the minds and hearts of people without having your own mind and heart affected—even changed.

The narrator is perfect. It’s a joy to listen to his rich voice and perceptive storytelling.

Michener, as usual, leaves no stone unturned in unearthing history through the lives of his characters.

Gripping and tedious

Good reading with abysmal pronunciation of Polish words - it's like he didn't even try!

As with Hawaii and Alaska, the story follows a group of Polish families through several centuries and historic events. I was drawn in and really enjoyed the telling of their stories

A great story

Another compelling story line placed throughout historical events. I learned a lot that I did not know.

Reading Michener never disappoints me

I entered into this endeavor more out of curiosity than interest. When I was done I could no believe the scope and interaction that the Polish people had in all European, Scandinavian, Russian and Asian history. This is a must read book because what happened and why, over and again in Poland affected every aspect of all those histories; and I didn't know the story at all.

Many will not take the time, but those who do not should never believe they know anything about the development of the history of those nations. The history of all those areas is the product of what Poland was, and will be. Michener; an extraordinary book!

A must read of European History

A well-done tail by James Michener which I read to prepare for my trip to Poland in the summer of 2020. I do regret that he did not write it after the fall of the Berlin wall.

Classic story

The story grants you access to the little people’s perspective through the centuries.

It gave me a new perspective that slavery was really not an invention of the new world , but an ancient practice of people’s throughout history. Perhaps a more refined cloak, but slavery all the same.

This was something I’d never really considered when i visioned the rational for cultural behaviors throughout the ages.

At first I thought the narration might become monotonous, but further on, I found the rhythm of his cadence to be perfect for not disrupting the meaningful history lesson I was receiving.

Yes crazy stupid things happen when people think they own one another. Great book, great story, great lessons for all. I was hoping for a more grand finally, but I guess that’s still being written.

As usually Mr Michener has built an engaging story behind a vast history to make it “down right fun to learn”.

I love this novel and loved it even more the second time around. The language is a bit dated and as folks have mentioned in other reviews Larry McKeever's narration is somewhat mechanical but these have been recorded before Audible was a thing and books on tape targeted the visually impaired demographic. In the case of Michener I do not care. These books are a staple, a comfort zone, a mug of hot chocolate on a gloomy day. I am so glad Audible finally decided to bring these novels in.
Excellently researched, fabulously written and engaging, What an epic journey through time and space of Poland. Beautifully crafted. Only wish it was longer.

What a gem

This narrator worried me at first. He sounded like a robot. When I first got the book I even played a few seconds for my kids asking them if this was a robot. They said yes. I listened all the way through. Mostly while driving. I like the narrator now very much for this story. Either he warms up as we go or I adjust; probably a little of both. His flat delivery becomes an asset as he delivers subtle inflections during the various parts. Interesting effect. Does not tire me out overacting.
The story is a sweep through centuries but as a son of a father from the Gdansk area, details of the long history of the country of Poland are fascinating to me. The intro stating Michener's extensive research for this book provided most impressive credentials, giving a nice confidence to the listener. If one is interested in this part of the world's history, then it is highly recommended.
