The second murderous installment of the Campbell and Carter Mysteries.

When old Monty discovers a dead body in his drawing room, it's up to Inspector Jess Campbell to get to the bottom of the mystery.

These Ann Granger books have the right mix of believable story lines along with interesting, lively characters. I also enjoy listening to the great English voices.

Brutish Mysteries

Book two of series started a bit slow to grab my attention but I pushed through and then shortly I was totally enthralled. Look forward to the next book in this series.

The authors description of Monte, the irascible character around whom, so much of the story revolves, drew me from the first few sentences.

As in her previous book, the solution requires characters to behave irrationally which, while this can be true, (in”real” life), I hope that the next book does not rely on this trope once again.

The character of the Superintendent continues to be undeveloped. His interests and motivations continue to be opaque.

We have learned more about the
Sergeant’s personality, who, so far, seems to be the character with the most potential for interest.

I believe the Inspector is meant to be an attractive character, but she teeters on immaturity and impulsiveness. She most definitely needs to be sent back to police procedure school as it somehow did not occur to her to get the registration number of a speeding car that almost hit her. It beggars belief that an inspector’s reflexes would be so sluggish.

I was unable to understand why the Superintendent would be at all interested in pursuing a relationship with her as seemed to be hinted toward the end of this book.

Interesting plot; quirky characters

The voice actor does a very good job reading, and it really adds to the story. I felt like the repeat characters are starting to have some personality, but I would like to see more. The story lacks in that area. The rest is great. I guessed early on who, but I wasn't sure why

it became tedious after the 10th chapter. I found the last several chapters enjoyable. The ending was a surprise.

All in all, its worth a listen, but the first thing that struck me about this book was how annoying some of the characters are, or maybe it's the narration? Practically shrieking/yelling in saying the lines, etc. As I listen while I'm trying to relax or work, I wasn't sure I'd be able to continue listening, but stuck in long enough for the story to progress and to get past those scenes. I'll continue on in the series, but the books seem to miss a little bit of spark. Perhaps the characters need more fleshing out, or something. There's just nothing that really makes you care about any of them.
