The story had all the elements of a good one, but I did not enjoy it. I feel like the story was lacking something, along with the narration. The narration wasn't objectively bad, it just didn't seem to fit to.

This book has one huge problem. It does not develop nor set up the antagonists in a meaningful way at all, especially in the first few hours. This means the protagonist is depicted as a brutal, proud, mass murdering tyrant who wants to take over and control the world. Thus for the first few hours I wanted him to fail, and I hated him.

But I stuck with the book mostly because I like the narrator from other books I listened to with him. The author still failed to set up the antagonists as fully fleshed people. Even the gods whom the protagonists hate are, as far as I can tell from the story, the good guys when they turn against the protagonist.

This is basically a book about a guy who is to the core evil and the bane of the whole world, but it's still a good book.

The story is an interesting twist on the genre. There is a fair amount of expositional thought and dialog though. I liked the characters and some of the mechanics are also interesting. The narration is ecellecnt@

Mage gets reborn without magic. Would be like waking up without an arm. Lots of drama and political intrigue alongside awesome action. Good start to what I hope to be a complete series!

In a gaming world, of course. The strongest mage, undone by the gods he worshipped and lived for. betrayed and murdered only to be saved from the inevitable and shat out into a world BEFORE he existed so he could right the wrongs. OK. Got it.

The narration is performed in a way that sounds like Rod Serling doing a Twilight Zone introduction, snappy, broken, sharp and unconvincing. But you get used to it, sort of.

The world and associated rules and guidance for the MC to accomplish his goal foisted on him by a trickster seems impossible, don't they all, and the meandering path to overpowered godhood is mildly entertaining. Your call.

The question is: Buy the next book in the series or is this just a one and done? At the moment, I do not think I will follow this story further.

It’s a good story. It’s well written and fascinating storyline but I’m not quite sure. I like the main character. I would recommend you should read it for yourself. I am still up in the air of whether I’m going to get the next book or not.

Saul is the mage to an empire who gets booted to the past, given a System, and charged with surpassing his old self before his old self is born in twelve years. He starts in a small village beset by evil warlocks. He saves the village and moves on to save another. He learns an old friend of his has also come back in time. He must now find his friend and accelerate his power grab by two years. Book ends.

It’s an interesting story. The narrator has a smooth enticing voice. The system is new to both character and reader. The pace is steady . In all a pleasant listen. Please enjoy

Unique use of system magic along with a smattering of other magics. Start could move a little faster, but character development is well done so far. Can't wait for the next installment.
