The story can have it's slow moments but overall I love the story. The attention to detail. I want more! Hoping to hear what happens to Evie next 🧜🏻‍♀️

I was surprised to have enjoyed the first book, but this one was a fail. All the problems of the first book came back and were even bigger. Plot line completely unrealistic, motivations of the numerous people laughably improbable.

Narrator was amazing. I only wish she had better content to narrate

Loved listening to this book. Parts of the book can be slow, but, like the first book in this series, it had a great ending.

I love how this story sets you on the edge of your seat from the first book, keeps you there throughout, and brings it all back around full circle by the end. So beautiful, so imaginative, so creative, it's just a masterful piece of art in form of the written word.

It was not as good as the first book. but still good and worth reading.

It was good

Somewhat lacking in emotion, this book hovered on the edge of pulling me in. It just never quite got there.
The big confrontation at the end felt a bit lacking. I was really hoping there would be a big battle where the two stories truly collided, but the separation between our heroines was just a bit too much to make the ending altogether satisfying.
I didn't expect World War I to appear in this book, I'll be honest. It added a lot of extra complications (obviously), and I'm not sure it actually enriched the book. It did pull me away from the magic and immersion though, but that's not surprising as alternate history isn't typically something I read.
Whaling ships and trawler nets could have easily replaced U Boats and sea mines, and the story would have been just fine.
The budding romance was alright. It was just kinda there. It didn't develop as I'd hoped it would, so it didn't pull me into the book as it could have.
Regardless, Evie and Runa's journeys toward freedom and their own voices are worth the read.
I listened to this as an audiobook, and the production quality was certainly there. I'm just not sure what the point was in hiring two separate female voice actors. It didn't really add to the experience.

Sarah Henning brought back characters we came to know and adore, while finding a way to seamlessly transition into a new time and characters, This thrilling new chapter into the lives of the Sea Witch, the Polyps, and the little mermaid who fell in love feels like a final ending to the conflicts between the magic of the land and sea,

I loved the first book. This one just seemed all over the place. It was an ok book, but definitely not as good as the first one!

I enjoyed the continuation of the Sea Witch's story, but I didn't expect it to become a WWI historical fantasy. Where the first book portrayed two character perspectives at different moments in time through flashbacks, this book switched back and forth during the same time period every few chapters from land to sea. I loved seeing Evie use magic with more confidence and experience. I liked the twin storyline with Runa and Alia, though again like in the first book I wish it had ended differently for them. Oh well, fairy tales don't always do what we want. I really appreciated the two narrators instead of just one.

Maturity rating: teen and up recommended. Life or death situations, threat of war, guns, murder, blood, witch hunting, magic used for defense/offense, hatred of other peoples, drinking, occasional light swearing, mild romance.
