Gender conscious detective mystery, with neat provocation and punchy humor.  It’s a decidedly girlboss book but some trigger warnings for sexual abuse and betrayal handled empoweringly for weird gender posturing.  It’s the sort of stuff that is as much a musing on gender politics than a detective mystery (and better for it).  The dystopian elements are more social extrapolation and commentary than any sort of ‘fun’ scifi antics, like how debt companies get hacked and go out of business due to general predatory practices or how the middle class has expanded.  Narrator Kim Rossi does epic work and making the material come to life, better than it might be on it's own (her general voice is gold but occassionally here character voices don't work).  The stuff is surprisngly condescending for such otherwise edgy content with stuff like cautions on permanence of the internet and themes that are sometimes too obvious (like the purple kitty being an allusion).  There are times it feels downright preachy.  Some of the sexual themes felt distasteful, but maybe based in worthy female anger at an unjust world.  I liked the first book more than the second because the second seemed too focused on the villain as a character.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request, and have voluntarily left this review. I really enjoyed this collection, even though it's can be disturbing at time. Serena life has not been easy, but it has created a powerful mind with a strong character. With the help of her foster parents and friends, she because a very successful PI. Success has attracted a serial killer. Serena is in a race against time to save her world. Well written characters with a fast paced plot that will keep you listening longer then you intended.
