Acerca de esta escucha

In the holy city of Othir, treachery and corruption lurk at the end of every street, just the place for a freelance assassin with no loyalties and few scruples.

Caim makes his living on the edge of a blade, but when a routine job goes south, he is thrust into the middle of an insidious plot. Pitted against crooked lawmen, rival killers, and sorcery from the Other Side, his only allies are Josephine, the socialite daughter of his last victim, and Kit, a guardian spirit no one else can see.

But in this fight for his life, Caim only trusts his knives and his instincts, but they won't be enough when his quest for justice leads him from Othir's hazardous back alleys to its shining corridors of power. To unmask a conspiracy at the heart of the empire, he must claim his birthright as the Shadow's Son....

This one surprised me! The characters were solid, the pace was fast, and there were some good surprises! I really enjoyed it!

The narrator reminds me of Garret from the first Thief game at times. The dramatization was cool for the most part, but occasionally too loud and a bit overwhelming. I think it added more than it took away.

If you dig a supernatural assassin story, definitely give this a read!

A quick and entertaining read!

The minimization of rape was horrible, to say the least. The particular scene is treated with irreverence by both the author and characters. It is quite clear that Jon Sprunk treats female characters as objects with no actual personality, but that is unfortunately common with male writers. What makes his writing worse is his fictitious presentation that his heroine has any real kind of personality that contributes to her role aside from her physical existence. Due to his subtle misogyny, the story is cringey throughout, but his rape scene and all that followed it was so discussing, if I hadn’t already been put off by his writing, would have directly resulted in my never reading another one of his books again, which of course is the case anyway. You know it’s bad if you are not driven on to complete a series. I strongly recommend NOT EVER readying this novel.
