From D-Day to the Battle of the Bulge and more, here is the authorized biography of one of the most celebrated paratroopers of Easy Company, Sergeant Shifty Powers, the legendary sharpshooter from the Band of Brothers.
As a boy, Darrell "Shifty" Powers' goal was to become the best rifle shot he could be. His father trained him to listen to the woods, to "see" without his eyes. Little did Shifty know his finely tuned skills would one day save his life - and the lives of his fellow paratroopers.
As one of the original men who trained at Camp Toccoa, Georgia, Shifty was one out of only two soldiers in Easy Company to initially earn the coveted expert marksman designation. He parachuted into France on D-day and fought for a month in Normandy; 80 days in Holland; 39 in the harshly cold winter of Bastogne; and for nearly 30 more near Haguenau, France, and the Ruhr pocket in Germany.
Shifty's War is a tale of heroism and adventure, of a soldier's blood-filled days fighting his way from the shores of France to the heartland of Germany, and the epic story of how one man's skills as a sharpshooter propelled him to a life greater than he could have ever imagined.

Own. I’ve listened to the Dick Winters books (two of them) and another book about a best buddies from the inner city who were life-long friends and true characters. But “Shifty’s War” gave me insight into another type of everyday hero, a man who spoke plainly and yet exceedingly eloquently. His Southern manners and sensibilities were both endearing and heartwarming. Like most from his generation, he didn’t spend time talking about, or wallowing in the horrors of war; he his what was asked of him, then came home and built a fine life for himself. He surrendered himself with good people, a work ethic, and a desire to live a good life. Have achieved that, and more. He didn’t shy away from the struggles he faced with cancer and such, but approached those as anyone with a strong but human character would, seeking to carry on, through good days and bad. Finding pleasure in what he could. Absolutely authentic, rings true for my father, and now myself. A great read, whether you’re a WW II buff or not, because first and foremost it’s a human story, about a good man. Highly recommend
A great life story of a truly good man.
