Acerca de esta escucha

During the American Revolution and the border conflicts that followed, Simon Girty's name struck terror into the hearts of U.S. settlers in the Ohio Valley and the territory of Kentucky. Girty (1741-1818) had lived with the Natives most of his life. Scorned by his fellow white frontiersmen as an "Indian lover," Girty became an Indian agent for the British. He accompanied Native raids against Americans, spied deep into enemy territory, and was influential in convincing the tribes to fight for the British.

The Americans declared Girty an outlaw. In U.S. history books he is a villain even worse than Benedict Arnold. Yet in Canada, Girty is regarded as a Loyalist hero, and a historic plaque marks the site of his homestead on the Ontario side of the Detroit River.

In Native history, Girty stands out as one of the few white men who championed their cause against American expansion. But was he truly the "White Savage" of legend, or a hero whose story was twisted by his foes?

Breezes through the hearsay, and packed with facts. The narrator's pace is quick without much added emotion and drama. I did enjoy it because I was interested in learning more about Simon Girty.

I was not aware that Simon Girty was anti American until I read this. Very good story that paints a good picture of how the tribes, British, and Americans all interacted.

After hearing about the evil Simon and Jim Girty for many years, this book appears to be a complete whitewash. What I really found offputting was that the evil deeds, real or supposed, were simply not described. The author, for example, writes of an indian woman who tried to defecate in Simon Kenton's face while he was a prisoner, whereupon he bit her private parts. However, the author says the woman sat over Kenton and he bit her butt. That leads me to wonder what else he glossed over. I was hoping for an accurate history and I feel disinclined to believe the tales of Simon and Jim Girty were exaggerated due to them being raised by indians or other racist possibilities. Read on Audible.
