Another chapter in the story of the heir to the Morozov mages. It takes place in a cruel world where ancient bloodlines with magical abilities enjoy power and influence, while Normals devoid of magical gifts are of no use to anyone.

This depressing fate was in store for our hero, Ivan, too—he was condemned to death by his father, who was sure that he was as magic-less as a puppet. But Ivan was rescued and brought up by an old warrior, and the head of the Morozov bloodline was able to transfer his gifts to Ivan just before his death—leaving an impostor soul from another world in his body. After coming back from the dead, our hero wasn't quite the same, and he underwent severe trials and learned how to fight bloodthirsty demons.

As a student at a branch of the Imperial Academy, Ivan couldn't hide his affiliation with his princely bloodline for long—a rare magical talent, fostered in him by his teacher, gave him away. Despite this advantageous discovery, it won't be easy for our hero to find himself in imperial high society, and fate only has more trials in store for him.

This book left me waiting for by something to happen but nothing really of consequence came along until the very end which was a cliffhanger.
The next book, if it doesn’t fill in the gaps that this one left, I probably won’t continue this series past it.

Not much till the end with a cliffhanger

the first book in this series was really interesting. Even though i generally dislike books with children as the lead - unless its specifically a children's book - was delightfully surprised. there were some annoying tropes and inconsistencies, but over all i liked the "OP kid battles demons while hiding from rich family" story.

Then book two basically abandoned the demon battling as anything more than a convenient way of creating drama at Pre-Teen Magic School. Ugh. i find it boring and tedious to listen to a grown man navigating school bullies and over-the-top infantile adults. Even so, it wasn't terrible and i was looking forward to the Ivan & George teamup.

Which brings us to this boring & disappointing installment: Adults who act like Children and Magic Sports. George is the worst kind of Adult in a Kids Book; completely disregarding ample evidence of Ivan's intelligence and maturity, and then flying off the handle when Ivan doesn't live up to adult standards.

Spoilers:

Ivan, meanwhile, makes no progress. his warrior rank is still at soldier two - even though he was supposed to be upgraded two books ago. his Magic-Magic (as opposed to his Warrior-Magic) is ... non existent. he spends a lot of time being a child at a parties, trailing behind the grownups who are doing the actually interesting things off-camera (there's a whole coordinated attack on the Demons in the wastelands that's just offhandedly dealt with in a couple sentences). Out of nowhere, Ivan is a business genius; but that all takes a back-seat to half the book, which is dedicated to MAGIC SPORTS. yay. awesome. lets have a super Magic Sports Events that we describe in super-detail; and then stop the book Before the Final Match.

Listen, i dont even care about the stupid Magic Sports (National Kids Warrior and Mage competition) events; i found all of that incredibly boring. but i get annoyed that after two-and-a-half books of Ivan beating up literally everyone, including grown soldiers a full rank above him, the author tried to adjust the power-scaling and convince you that anyone else at this competition had a chance. Seriously, Ivan should have murdered all these kids. Then the heavy-handed foreshadowing started. OMG, there's so much at stake here, good thing there's no way Ivan can lose... then the Surprise Monkey Wrench, and roll credits before the final match. That's inexcusable.

So, yeah. i'm done with this series. If, however, you enjoy reading about 12 year old stuck up brats going about their normal school lives, interacting with their stuck-up brat parents, teachers, etc. and you really like hearing about 12 yearolds getting a hot-dog at Magic Sports match, then you'll probably like this.

3 Strikes: Magic School, Magic Sports, Cliffhanger

definitely the second book was the weakest so far it just took so much longer out of the story it was really slow at first and really fast at the end and you barely get any time for the main character and his growth just massively slowed down finally we get back to actually growing quickly I also personally like the creative use of the story changing its version of cursing it just seems lazy when writers don't do that within their own worldview like using cuss words from our world don't really make much sense in a society that has no connection I will say the beginning of the book is a little slow but I did like the idea of him getting back to a royal lifestyle That's definitely something that the series has been missing up to this point

I will say I'm a little discontented with how it seems he's surrounded by people who constantly accost him even though they know who he is in his Royal lineage it just seems strange and doesn't make much sense like his supposed magic teacher constantly trying to stop his growth just doesn't make much sense that's like a death sentence in the corporate world pettiness doesn't make much sense when you're dealing with somebody as powerful as a noble it just seems

I will say however the ending of this is absolutely atrocious I had initially reviewed it as five stars because it relatively was a good book but the ending was just so bad it makes no sense to leave on a cliffhanger like that....

much better then the second book
