The cherry blossoms are in full bloom in Washington, D.C., and the Calhouns are in the midst of hosting their annual party to celebrate the best of the spring season. I read a lot of books as well as listening to them on audible. This author is great at character development.

Great character development

What I love most about a good whodunit is trying to piece together the mystery as I read—but with this book, it felt like everything was laid out in the first few pages. I could pretty much tell exactly how it was going to unfold. The subplot twist was interesting, but it also felt kind of thrown in, like an attempt to shake up a story that was otherwise really predictable. I’m not a fan of endings that feel rushed or patched together—I want to be taken on a journey, to question everything and be surprised. And honestly, the lack of character development early on made it hard to care about what happened to this family. Everyone came off as entitled, self-absorbed, and just… unlikable. So when the father died, and the twist happened, I wasn’t emotionally invested because I didn’t really care for any of them. There was no one to root for.

The story twists to the point of improbability, and to the point of coming right back around in a circle to the beginning. The subplot threw me off at points, but it kept the book from being too predictable within the twists. Still, though, I loved it. It’s rare to root for murderers for me but I was actually sympathetic to this one.

I’ve read several books where the cast of characters were one too many killing the story. NOT THE CASE HERE! Each character offers such a rich and complex picture for developing the story, motivations? And the interactions between each other. I also enjoyed all the tidbits or Easter egg details that are used to tie up the ending of a perfectly horrific criminal plot!!

It took me a long time to get into the story, but I didn’t really care for it even though I listened my way through, but it was a struggle. The narrator had this voice that was dramatic the whole way through and just over the top. I would not recommend this.

I was not disappointed in this book, and though it was very improbable, but you never know truth can be stranger than fiction. It was very entertaining.
