With empathy, grace, humor, and piercing insight, the author of Gods in Alabama presents a powerful, emotionally resonant novel of the South that confronts the truth about privilege, family, and the distinctions between perception and reality - the stories we tell ourselves about our origins and who we really are.

Superheroes have always been Leia Birch Briggs' weakness. One tequila-soaked night at a comics convention, the usually level-headed graphic novelist is swept off her barstool by a handsome and anonymous Batman.

It turns out the caped crusader has left her with more than just a nice, fuzzy memory. She's having a baby boy - an unexpected but not unhappy development in the 38-year-old's life. But before Leia can break the news of her impending single-motherhood (including the fact that her baby is biracial) to her conventional Southern family, her stepsister Rachel's marriage implodes. Worse, she learns her beloved 90-year-old grandmother, Birchie, is losing her mind, and she's been hiding her dementia with the help of Wattie, her best friend since girlhood.

Leia returns to Alabama to put her grandmother's affairs in order, clean out the big Victorian that has been in the Birch family for generations, and tell her family that she's pregnant. Yet just when Leia thinks she's got it all under control, she learns that illness is not the only thing Birchie's been hiding. Tucked in the attic is a dangerous secret with roots that reach all the way back to the Civil War. Its exposure threatens the family's freedom and future, and it will change everything about how Leia sees herself and her sister, her son and his missing father, and the world she thinks she knows.

I love Ms. Jackson's books and her talent at bringing them to life. This one, although fun was not my favorite. She had a good plot and ideas but somehow it just got a bit muddled and overblown.I am not a big fan of comic books so that didn't really draw me in, however, it was interesting to hear about a world I know nothing about. Bottom line her books draw me in and keep me listening. Maybe its just to hear her read with her cute southern drawl.

A "comic" adventure

E
xactly the book that fans of this author come back time and time to drink up. It’s quaint, quirky, funny and oh so southern - as usual. Joshilyn Jackson fine-tuned product. I count the days till release, then plan extra reading time in my schedule because I know once I start, it’s going to be hard to put down.

I must say though that Almost Sisters took a little longer to get into than normal. The scenario felt pushed and pulled to fit an agenda or story line that the author was trying satisfy. It took a long time till it began to flow naturally. Some of the one liners in this book are remember ably hysterical. This book really showcased Joshilyn Jackson’s sharp wit and killer humor.

Funny, insightful, and most of all real characters. I felt like I was back in Alabama with all the small minded & forward thinking people it entails. There truly is two distinct versions of the south. Jackson captured it beautifully.

I fully enjoyed this!

I was really excited for this book after reading the summary, however after finishing the book, it left me feeling like the book was hurried and unfinished. There were many subplots that were developed that felt like they were left unfinished. I felt like the book should’ve been a few chapters longer to wrap everything up a little bit better as not making it feel like it abruptly ended. Other than that, I thought the book was okay.

Almost...but not quite.

Light mystery /romance with some unexpected plot ideas. Enjoyed the read — 2 times. Very well performed as well.

Enough twists to stay interesting

Great narrator
I admit I thought the storyline was a little slow to start. But after I got into the book I loved it! I laughed and I was actually brought to tears thinking about Miss birchie

Heartwarming

I just loved everything about this book! The story had several different threads that wove together to make a nuanced and beautifully textured tapestry. The author, who was also the narrator, took what was a terrific story and knocked it out of the park. Her distinctive voice and wonderful character voices were so enjoyable that I can't imagine this book read by anyone else. I am hesitant about listening to another of her self-read books, for fear that it couldn't possibly measure up!

An Almost Perfect Book!

I expected another easy breezy chick lit Southern story. This was so much more. It had mystery and explored the depths of multiple types of relationships. There is definitely something that everyone can relate to in this book. The reading was wonderful. I especially loved the old lady voices. I was sad for it to end.

So much better than I expected!

This is one of the most beautiful, moving books I've ever read. I love everything this author has written, but this book was so rich and emotion- filled and funny that i cannot recommend it enough. The author's reading brings the characters to life. I can't imagine anyone else reading her books. And I wish she narrated more books, because I'm convinced she could make the alphabet enchanting. Please, read this book. Aside from being wonderful, if has a truly important message everyone should hear.
