A Body of Divinity, considered a classic among 17th-century Puritan works, contains a series of sermons on the Westminster Catechism, a central catechism in English-speaking Calvinist churches. Watson details several of the questions and answers from the Catechism.

Many today believe that the Christian life is rather easy to both obtain and live. But the Puritans saw it as warfare, as wrestling, as "holy violence" to use their term. The Apostle Paul spoke of beating his own body into subjection. And this holy violence is to be brought not only against one's self, but against Satan, the world, and heaven too. And in this confrontation, we must use the weapons God has given us: reading the Word, hearing the Word, prayer, meditation, self-examination, and the due observance of the Lord's Day.

Every one of the Ten Commandments is relevant today. Some think of these commandments as the Law of Moses, now replaced by God's grace and mercy, but a closer look reveals that we can't willfully break a single one of the commandments and live. Every one of the commandments wholeheartedly obeyed will produce fruit of righteousness, peace, and spiritual prosperity. Society says "do whatever you want", but a careful study and application of this set of "life principles" will provide boundless fruit for the righteous.

Puritan John Flavel (1630-1691) in Keeping the Heart (originally titled: A Saint Indeed or The Great Work of a Christian Opened and Pressed) has proven to be a steady and timely friend to many over the years. Using Proverbs 4:23 ("Keep your heart with all vigilance for from it flow the springs of life."), Flavel creates a treatise designed for all professing Christians.

Thomas Watson (c. 1620 - 1686) was an English Puritan preacher and author. The Lord's Prayer is the third volume in his series of books explaining the tenets of the Christian faith, the first being The 10 Commandments and the second The Apostle's Creed. Watson provides a lengthy and in-depth exposition of each concept or verse of the familiar prayer from Matthew 6. This is a valuable reference for Christians who wish to improve their prayer lives, as Watson derives deep layers of meaning from the simple words of the prayer.

All Things for Good by Thomas Watson provides the biblical answer to the contemporary question: Why do bad things happen to good people? Thomas Watson, the 17th-century minister of St. Stephen's Walbrook, believed he faced two great difficulties in his pastoral ministry. The first was making the unbeliever sad in the recognition of his need of God's grace. The second was making the believer joyful in response to God's grace.

Written by John Owen, one of the best known of the Puritans. In The Mortification of Sin, John Owen insisted on the importance of the Christian dealing effectively with their sinful tendencies and attitudes. He believed that God, through his Word and Spirit, had provided the guidelines and the power for this to be achieved. Owen effectively dismisses various excuses for not engaging in self scrutiny and yet avoids the current trend of self absorption.

Thomas Goodwin seeks not to diminish that truth, but to enhance it by ensuring the church that Jesus Christ is also still perfectly loving and astoundingly forgiving. His love for his people is pure, genuine, and humble. He is still the one who washed his disciples’ feet and met a sinner at the well. He is a compassionate and tender father who desires to encourage and uplift his children. Goodwin encourages Christians to endeavor to fully grasp this concept and to let it influence their own perception of and love for Christ.

From Genesis to Revelation, the providence of God directs the entire course of redemptive history. Providence is “God’s purposeful sovereignty”. The Puritans, as a body, have done more to elevate the national character than any class of Englishmen that ever lived. Ardent lovers of civil liberty, and ready to die in its defense - mighty at the council board, and no less mighty in the battlefield - feared abroad throughout Europe, and invincible at home while united - great with their pens, and no less great with their swords - fearing God very much, and fearing men very little - they were a generation of men who have never received from their country the honor that they deserve.
