Acerca de esta escucha

The Battle of Gettysburg is a vivid firsthand account of the most famous battle of the Civil War. Two weeks later, while his memory was fresh and his adrenaline still high, Union lieutenant Frank Haskell—a Medal of Honor recipient—wrote this book, one of the most honest and accurate eyewitness accounts of war ever written.

Haskell, an officer in the Army of the Potomac, describes soldiers preparing for and fighting in a battle that—unknown to them—would shape the destiny of a nation. Haskell is more than a casual observer, however. He is at the center of the Union line as Pickett’s Charge thunders up Cemetery Ridge.

Reseñas editoriales

What differentiates this description of The Battle of Gettysburg from others is the fact that Frank Haskell, the author, was an officer in the Army of the Potomac. Haskell wrote this report days after the battle itself, and his observations are crisp and insightful.

Tom West's performance of this eyewitness account is not to be missed. He makes Haskell's account fluid and enrapturing. The listener will feel like he or she is standing next to Haskell in one of the most important moments of American history.

Reseñas de la Crítica

"Tom West's flair for reading battle descriptions has been enhanced by a powerful yet compassionate audio presentation." (Booklist)

Eye Witnees to Gettysburg

I first listened to this audio book The Battle of Gettysburg by Frank Haskell back some 30 plus years ago after I purchased it the National Park store at Gettysburg. I was impressed with it then, lost it, and decided to purchase it again on Audible. I was not disappointed with my re-listening. Haskell was a Colonel and aide to General Gibbon at the Battle. His observations from the beginning to the end of the battle on spot on. Very detailed and if you have visited the Gettysburg battlefield you know of what Haskell observed and spoke. Sadly, Haskell died 11 months later at the Battle of Cold Harbor.

If you are not familiar with the Battle of Gettysburg you cannot go wrong with this Audible selection. Narration was well done.

This was written by a union captian who was at "the angle"; he lead the deail that counted the confederate dead after pickett's charge, and he was killed in action several months later.

A very good 1st hand account from a reputable individual at a pivotal location on the line.

It was interesting to get the perspective of someone who was at the battle. The book was written a short time after the battle, and therefore only contains those events the author was witness to. Thus the lack of detail about the first day of the battle and the fighting on Culp's hill. The main problem I had with the book was the terrible sound quality of the recording though the narrative was quite interesting.
