If you think you know something of the first years of the American Revolution, this book will add to that knowledge. If you know nothing, this is a great beginning. I have read his history of the American Army in World War II and this is just as good. A great story teller and worth the listen.

I am enthralled and by the writing, but after trying to follow the key dramatic parts of the narrative with the light hearted narrative style, I finally had to give up! You begin to wonder if the narrator ever processed what he is reading! The events taking place are often horrific in content, but the pitch and tone of our beloved story teller is as if the will all live happily ever after tomorrow. I give up!

This is a well voiced work from excellent material. I can’t wait for the rest of the books. This book is a must listen to.

Rick Atkinson has a great writing style and assembles his material with unique perspectives from that era that transform what could yet be another third person Revolutionary tale to one with first person perspective that has transformed some of my beliefs on what happened in that war.

Although I would have like a little more background details about how the colonies came to have such a strong sense of common purpose, this description of events from the Boston Tea Party to the aftermath of Washington’s victory st Princeton is thrilling and gripping and perfectly detailed. Atkinson is a born story teller. Bravo! Can’t wait for the next volume in this trilogy.

An interesting and factual history of the American Revolution. This first volume was a great compilation through 1777. Highly recommended by me.

Outstanding Revolutionary History

While a good book, it’s mainly quotes and a rehash from other great books of the era.

I found, for example, that the Battles of Lexington and Concord were better told in Philbrick’s “Bunker Hill”.

It seems Atkinson gets so caught up in minute details that he misses the forest from the trees.

Couldn't turn it off

Atkinson provides a deeper understanding of The American revolution and just how desperate was the struggle by taking us into the wharfs and large cities on both sides of the Atlantic where excruciating transport logistics and provisioning armies with men, horses , livestock, tents, uniforms, artillery pieces and gunpowder control the strategy, tactics and outcomes for both sides.

Equally powerful and transformative, Atkins painstakingly unveils true accounts true accounts and data which make it possible to “get” both Loyalists and Colonials and feel their animosity build into what is every bit a violent civil war as it is a glorious Revolution. There is a lesson here for us today.

Every aspect of total war: , “ethnic cleansing” forced migrations, war crimes, scorched Earth, “death camps” (Ship prisons), propoganda and more are brought to light Atkin’s Revolution as I have never read before. — all documented with battle reports, first hand accounts and numbers. What a great contribution.

Real contribution to our understanding of our First Civil War

The author painstakingly describes the war through researched first person accounts. It was a difficult read to put down at night. I can’t wait for his part two.
