Acerca de esta escucha

Marine algae are the supreme eco-engineers of life: they oxygenate the waters, create habitat for countless other organisms, and form the base of a food chain that keeps our planet unique in the universe as we know it. In this audiobook Josie Iselin explores both the artistic and the biological presence of 16 seaweeds and kelps that live in the thin region where the Pacific Ocean converges with the North American continent - a place of incomparable richness. Each species receives a detailed description of its structure, ecological importance, and humans’ scientific inquiry into it, told in scientifically illuminating yet deeply reverent and inspired prose. Iselin posits that we can learn not only about the seaweeds but also from them: their resilience, their resourcefulness, their poetry and magic.

I have listened to “Curious” several times over. The writing is that of a true storyteller and it is read in a style that carries you along on a journey. Ms. Iselin creates an intimate
connection to these unique creations of the sea and also she also makes us realize how important they are to our climate and why there is an urgent need to protect them.
It is obvious that the research done for this book is extensive but the personal interactions with the seaweeds bring them to life. The PDF is also a beautiful addition.

“Curious” is a treasure trove from the sea!

Many books of natural history are about the joy of the thing in nature, but this managed to be a bummer.
The descriptions were okay, but the stories are terse and every mention of the plant ecology starts with the obligatory moaning about climate change as if that’s all the organism is about. Her narrative is less sincere and more just artless and awkward.

What an awkward bummer.

I fell in love with seaweed in college after a marine botany class led me into the field with a field guide in hand. I've been looking for a book to guide me back to a familiar feeling of wonder. This book does just that. Learning about the history of algae and who has studied it made me prideful and happy to learn how many women came before me. Great read, definitely recommend.
