Forbidden. That's what they are to each other.

Maddie Stevens has never felt good enough. Not good enough to keep her parents' love. Not good enough to be independent and stop being her brother's problem. Not good enough to build the future she wants.

When she injures her ankle before a ballet audition that could change her career forever, she's convinced her life is over at twenty-one. What's the point of having dreams when they can go down the drain at any moment?

Because the universe has a cruel sense of humor, her physical therapist turns out to be a tank-shaped grouch who doesn't even seem to like her that much. It's totally unfair that, for six weeks, she's forced to look at that handsome beard and listen to that deep voice that makes her head all dizzy. Top that with the fact that he's ten years her senior, and falling for James Simmons is a recipe for disaster.

When their forced proximity makes the lines start to blur, the forbidden temptation becomes impossible to resist.

HOLY HOTNESS OF A SLOW BURN!

The Darkest Corner of the Heart is the second book in The Brightest Light series. I really enjoyed the first book in the series and decided to continue on. While I didn’t enjoy this one as much, I still want to check out the next book from this author. Similarly to the first book, this is a slow burn, age gap romance with mental health rep. The heroine of this book is actually the hero of book 1’s little sister that he became the guardian of in book 1.

The story kicks off with Maddie injuring her ankle before a ballet audition and is now convinced her career, and life, is over at 21. She has always struggled and felt like she’s a burden in life. Her mother and father didn’t want her, her brother and his wife (the couple of book 1) took her in and raised her. So she’s always felt like she was a nuisance to their relationship and family life. She has a lot of self doubt and self loathing while feeling guilty of her upbringing.

During her six-week PT appointment for her injury, she meets James, her physical therapist. Later on, her friend convinces her she needs to branch out and creates an online dating profile for Maddie, then she matches with James and swipes on his profile! This kind of leads to a convo between them and it is obvious there is some tension. A bit component to this story and relationship is how he feels she’s too young for him. He really feels that age difference between them (she’s 21, he’s 30), and definitely struggles with it. I didn’t quite get his hang up on this and how much of the plot this took over. I just didn’t connect to these 2 characters as much as I enjoyed the couple or book 1. So while this couple wasn’t my favorite, I’d still continue on in the series.

CW: feelings of parental abandonment, themes of alcoholism, drugs, death.
