Politics, love triangle, murder and suspense fills The Dollar a Year Man and pulls you in and keeps you listening.
Moving between Michigan and DC the plot thickens as Detective Mitch Paulson works to solve the murder of a beautiful lobbyist.
There are so many things I liked about this book, starting with the attention to details, character development and all the twists and turns.
I had a hard time getting use to the narration of David S. Dear. He has a very distinctive voice that didn't flow. There wasn't much variation between male character voices and the female voices weren't very believable.

Good audiobook

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of David S. Dear?

Probably someone whose enunciation was clear but not overexaggerated.

I was given this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

I received this personal note from the narrator, "I'm just reaching out to you to remind you to leave a review for The Dollar A Year Man as you had agreed to in exchange for receiving this audiobook for FREE.

You can bet that I will never listen to anything narrated by David S. Dear again. There, it's my review. You were third in my queue, but because of this rude behavior, I moved you up in order to give you a FREE review as agreed to. Take my email out of your address book, you won't need to contact me again.

Your narrator killed this book for me.

Overall this book was great! There were moments when my attention to the story was lost but not too long before it pulled me back in. This book does have the perfect amount of everything...murder, mystery, strong characters. Not sure if this is a series but I believe it could be. Narrator was perfect for the rolls of each character... I personally find it hard at times to get into a good audible book with male readers but I didn't have that problem here.

A very good murder mystery that features politics and the insurance industry. Traverse City police chief calls he's wealthy retired brother to return as a detective to help solve the crime. He follows the clues and finds more crimes. Quite an interesting tale that holds the listener to the end. I hope there will be more of these characters in the future.

The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed.

I received this audio book with the understanding that I would leave an honest review. I enjoyed the mystery very much. The characters were interesting but didn't take away from the story itself. David Dear did an good job with the characters. My only problem was David sometimes over emphasized words and I found this distracting. The farther I listened though the less it bugged me.

Nice mystery

I really enjoyed the story about politics, greed and murder. Mitch is a young retired detective, who is approached by his brother, Mark, Traverse City Chief of Police to help with a murder investigation. Mitch agrees to help for $1 per year since he doesn't need income (Mitch is a lottery winner millionaire). Carol is a young lobbyist in Washington DC and gets involved in an affair with a Senator from Michigan. She is found murdered in TC when she comes to visit her parents. As the investigation progresses, there are a good number of suspects in the world of politics and greedy health ins companies.

Narrator did a good job with the different voices but tends to enunciate too strongly.

You can tell from my prior reviews that I love a mystery, especially when the narration is in good balance. There is something about this narrator that did not resonate with me. Don't get me wrong--the narrator was good. I'm not sure what was there, or was not there, but the timbre of his voice kept me from settling in and really getting into this story. I started and stopped this listen quite a few times.

When I finally put whatever that narration issue was aside, I was rewarded with a rather decent mystery. I would have preferred if the main character was a bit more, well, main. There were so many other officials solving the mystery that his voice got lost sometimes. Still, the ending had a nice little twist.

An okay mystery

Where does The Dollar a Year Man rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

# 157. After a rough start this got better. The narration began with very odd pronunciation and pauses. I had some experience with hearing impaired children and adults. That is what came to mind. Exaggerated vowel sounds, for example. It got much better as the book progressed. Maybe it was just nerves.

The actual writing had issues to begin with too. Use of same term over and over. like "Golden" describing the opening where a man is walking his Golden Retriever. The repetition of the phrase. The repeated description of a serrated knife causing the wounds, either being a hunting or Kitchen knife. Again three or four times. I'm a knife collector, so I know what it is, maybe some wouldn't but that too was repeated.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Once I got into the story, the characters became more understandable and likeable. There were some odd actions that seemed out of character for some of the motivations but if you can set those aside, it is entertaining.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

I mentioned the issues I felt detracted from the overall product. Once David S. Dear got comfortable it was okay.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

As a whole it worked, all nitpicking on my part aside.

Any additional comments?

By the end, I felt this had a lot of potential and with some editing for creativity would be entertaining. It seemed almost rushed to production.

This will probably seem more negative than I mean it to. I think it has entertainment value and may become an interesting set of characters for a future series. Possibly.
