A string of grisly murders... A scared and superstitious populace... An investigator desperate for redemption...

When murders in the poverty-stricken Liberties begin to be credited to a savage dark beast with the soul of a recently deceased serial killer, Alderman James knows he must take on the case. He sees an all too human hand at work and is determined to win over the people he once let down so badly.

With only the duplicitous and deceitful Hellfire Club member, Mr. Edwards, for assistance, James ventures out in the cold, snowy streets in search of the true killer. Can he solve the case and redeem himself once and for all? Or will the fear and anger in the streets finally boil over into chaos?

If you like serial killer and detective stories in a historical setting, you'll love this book.

I listened to the audiobook version of this and honestly, it was an experience. The narrator was absolutely fantastic. His voice had the perfect tone for the eerie, snow-drenched streets of 18th-century Dublin. His accent was spot-on and completely immersed me in the world of European P. Douglas. It’s one of those performances that elevates an already good story into something truly gripping.

Having read a few of Douglas’s books now, I’m really loving his writing style. He has a way of drawing you in with vivid atmosphere, gritty realism, and characters that feel deeply human, even when they’re chasing down a killer that might not be.

This story has everything I want in a historical thriller: a dark and moody setting, a deeply flawed but determined investigator, and a mystery that kept me guessing. The twists and turns had me questioning everything, and by the time the ending came around, I was floored. I did not expect the reveal at all. Seriously, the “who done it” twist was so good.

The supernatural thread, is it a man, or something darker? Adds a whole new layer to the mystery. And the Hellfire Club element? Deliciously sinister. If you enjoy stories where folklore collides with cold-blooded murder, this is for you.

Highly recommend if you're into serial killer thrillers with a gothic edge, and definitely give the audiobook a try. The narrator truly brings the story to life in a way that lingers with you long after it ends. Looking forward to book two.

I really liked this book and enjoyed the mystery and the complex, complicated interactions between the different characters.

Strangely enough, even as this is part of a series called 'Alderman James Mystery', and he does, indeed, investigates the horrendous crimes that are unsettling Dublin, the main character in this story, at least OMHO, was the blacksmith Timothy Mullins.

He is a great character, a brave, conflicted man who is driven to hunt the Dolocher first for a need for revenge and later, for love. In my eyes, he is the real hero in the story.

The depiction of 18th century's Dublin, the poverty and hopeless of the inhabitants of the 'The Liberties' is really well done. And I always give extra points to any story that has me googling facts, and this one certainly did; the real historical background of this novel made it even better for me.

I'm really looking forward to the next book in this series.

Jack McArthur's narration was perfect for this story.

This was a story that grabbed me right off the bat and held my attention until the final words. Mr. Douglas has crafted a story that is filled with a fair amount of misdirection that kept me guessing what the Dolcher was. This is the second story I have listened to by Mr. Douglas and I can honestly say I have found a new favorite thriller author. Jack McArthur’s narration not only brought the characters alive, but his accent gave the story even more impact.

Keeps you guessing until the final moments.

This book was another story of mystery and myths. This story was a little hard to follow at the beginning but as the story progressed it became more interesting. The characters were well written and the environment was well detailed of the history.

Both the story and audio narrator were top-notch. The story was interesting, creepy, and suspenseful all at the same time. The narrator's voice and inflections were both simple and demonstrative at the same time. The ending of the story was enlightening and wrapped up the tale quite nicely.
Thank you to the author for allowing me a copy to listen to so I could choose to write a review of my own honest opinions.

During Georgian Ireland, a legend was born of a dark beast with murderous teeth that sought its prey in the dead of night. The Dolocher.
In this, the first instalment of the Alderman James Mysteries, the Alderman finds himself living through the events that made the Dolocher one of the most remembered happenings in Dublin.
The Black Dog prison was open from 1714-1794 and housed prostitutes, and was more known as a debt prison. When the murderer Olocher is arrested for murdering women and sent there to await his hanging, the whole neighbourhood is shocked when Olocher commits suicide. As many pigs were roaming the streets, the people believed that Olocher's spirit settled in them, thus still roaming the streets. This is only ingrained amongst the inhabitants when night after night, some unknown animal kills first watchmen and then the young girl who was a witness at Olocher's trial.

In this haunting narration of the book The Dolocher, written by European P Douglas, you, as the listener, is transported to Dublin. The plot is laid out as a good mystery should be, and the ending was a surprise. The characters are authentic, and the narrator's accents and performance of the different characters give authenticity to the novel.
