Between 1883-1896, Mary Baker Eddy wrote many articles, letters, and poems to support and encourage the growing membership of the Christian Science church she founded. Many were first published in The Christian Science Journal. Mary Baker Eddy published them as this separate book, Miscellaneous Writings. She suspended all Christian Science teaching for one year, urging the study of this book in its place.

The author, Mary Baker Eddy, considered this book her second most important work after Science and Health. Following the publication of her main book in 1875, Mary Baker Eddy was giving regular lectures in Massachusetts, at Hawthorne Hall, near the Boston Commons and named for Nathaniel Hawthorne. Between the late 1870s and the mid 1880s, with a seating capacity of 250, Eddy regularly filled the hall on Sunday afternoons, with parishioners eager to hear her lectures, which were pivotal in helping to quickly build the Christian Science movement. Someone said that while Dr. A. W.
