Acerca de esta escucha

Author and attorney Mark T. Mustian has won rave reviews for his ambitious novel, The Gendarme.

Plagued by failing memory, Emmett Conn dreams he was a gendarme in World War I and that his great love, Araxie, was separated from him after the war. With the lines between past and present blurring more every day, Emmett sets out to find the woman he lost all those decades ago.

What disappointed you about The Gendarme?

This story is difficult to get into and I disliked the premise of an old man, presumably dying, suddenly dream/remembering his past. I didn't like the characters and that made it difficult to care about the events and the outcome. I found the ending to be disappointing.

What could Mark Mustian have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Developed a likable character.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

I liked that the performance was innocuous - didn't distract from the story line.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Indifference.

Any additional comments?

After reading the background on the book on Mustian's website, I understood his rationale a bit more, but I still don't feel that he met his own goal of remembering a dark episode of the past.

Idea better than the book
