 A DEEP concern for the welfare of my fellow-mortals, and an earnest desire that they may be made partakers of the joy and glory of that salvation which comes by Christ, has induced me to present to them in this form, the following Sermon, written by John Venn, late rector of Clapham — a valued and experienced Christian; as it contains hints well calculated to produce serious reflection, to lead into humble watchfulness of spirit, and the endeavour to walk so closely with God, that whatsoever is done may be done to his glory. I am best satisfied to add, that my own observation and experience strongly confirm the truths which are attested in this Sermon: those whom I have known in prisons and in other places, who have been guilty of the greatest crimes and become most hardened in sin, I have generally found reached their sad condition gradually. Some easily besetting sin has been given way to when its first appearance was small, almost imperceptible; and this deviation has become by degrees habitual and increased, until it has grown into crime in its darkest form: hence we may observe, through how small an entrance an enemy may gain admission, and what devastation he may make! Having expressed these sentiments under the feeling of much Christian good-will, I would further express my earnest desire that none may be unduly discouraged by the sense of their frailty and transgression, neither admit the thought, that as they have already given way to evil of various kinds, there is no hope of amendment; and the sad result must follow of their being hardened in sin. On the contrary, may every feeling of conviction and sorrow be accepted as a proof of divine mercy and regard, remembering that it is the “goodness of God which leadeth to repentance,” and that pardon and peace are to be obtained through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, who “came into the world to save sinners.” “The whole need not a physician, but those that are sick.”—If when sickness first appears, we send for the physician, the disease may easily be subdued; but if allowed to proceed and gain ground, it may become incurable and spread great contagion. So spiritually, if upon the first motions of sin the Physician of value were at once resorted to, he would soon send health and cure; but if we neglect to apply to Him, the heart may be given up to its own lusts, and the contaminating influence of sin spread far and near. May such as read these pages obtain, from the same great Physician, remission of sins, and power to overcome all that is evil in small things as well as in great; be conformed to the will of God, and kept in the path of the just man, whose light shines brighter and brighter even unto the perfect day.
