Absolutely loved this book and cant wait for the rest of this series. I really hope this author has more books released on audible because I love her writing style and that era is unmatched to me.

I've listened to very few novels written in the first person. I've always found third person omniscient more interesting. The author, Porter, is very good at filling the character's mind with empotions, surroundings, action, etc and it truly sounds like you are listening to him tell his story, sharing his thoughts and describing the action solely from his perspective. I have no problem with use of the word, F*#k, but if you do, you will struggle with this book. Try to overlook your sensitivity...it's worth it.

I received a free copy of this audiobook from AudiobookBoom in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this audiobook. I was distracted by the profanity, but I didn't let it ruin the experience for me. I figure it was an uncensored view in the trenches with Coelwulf and his men. Despite the language and murderous ways, the characters were likable and believable. The humanity the would be king of Mercia showed his men was evident. The narration was well done and the story was a flashback of the previous month leading up to the incident depicted in the prologue. It was very cleverly done by the author because what the reader assumes isn't necessarily the outcome.

In the first few minutes I counted 5 or 6 f-bombs. I don’t mind swearing, but this word was used every few sentences. It’s jarring enough to pull me out of the story. The story was okay, not bad, not great. Just OVER use of one word. Variety is the spice of life and when reading or listening, I need more complex language than just f-word.
