Acerca de esta escucha
When the inscription on the amulet was deciphered, it was found to contain a ritual curse in Ancient Hebrew text. Further, it was dated by experts to approximately 1200 BCE, which makes it the oldest Israelite inscription found in the Land of Israel. This little metal object has raised big issues about the early history of Ancient Israel and the related portions of the Hebrew Bible.
Much is currently being written about the finding, deciphering, dating and implications of the amulet. But this book, which was written years before the amulet was found, gives the background to that discovery. It is the story of the Mt. Ebal excavations as seen through my eyes, since I had the good fortune to participate in the whole archaeological adventure starting from its beginnings in 1982.
Early on, our excavation revealed that the site had been the scene of a remarkable series of events that we could tie to specific biblical texts. Ever since, I have been driven to examine related archaeological, anthropological, geographical, and historical evidence. Among other things, I came to the conclusion that this site that I helped excavate is the actual site of the first Temple of the People of Israel in the Land of Israel. This is a controversial conclusion - it is contrary to universally accepted religious and scientific doctrine that the first temple was at the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.
This book is partly the story of the Ebal excavation, partly memoir, and part intellectual adventure. Readers found it to be a good read before the amulet was discovered. I think they will find it even more compelling now that there is strong evidence for the ideas and conclusions I relay in this book.
