A New York Times Notable Book

Acclaimed author Ann Patchett's debut novel, hailed as ""beautifully written . . . a first novel that second- and third-time novelists would envy for its grace, insight, and compassion” (Boston Herald)

St. Elizabeth’s, a home for unwed mothers in Habit, Kentucky, usually harbors its residents for only a little while. Not so Rose Clinton, a beautiful, mysterious woman who comes to the home pregnant but not unwed, and stays. She plans to give up her child, thinking she cannot be the mother it needs. But when Cecilia is born, Rose makes a place for herself and her daughter amid St. Elizabeth’s extended family of nuns and an ever-changing collection of pregnant teenage girls. Rose’s past won’t be kept away, though, even by St. Elizabeth’s; she cannot remain untouched by what she has left behind, even as she cannot change who she has become in the leaving.

Where does The Patron Saint of Liars rank among all the audiobooks you???ve listened to so far?

While the story is somewhat unrealistic, Ann's writing is so enchanting and Julia Gibson's reading so comfortable, it is a wonderful read/listen. You learn a lot about other times and other places, told only the way Patchett can tell it.

I am a real Patchett fan after reading

Who was your favorite character and why?

I loved them all but like the nun who

What does Julia Gibson bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?

Her voice, the clarity and intonation are delicious.

If you could rename The Patron Saint of Liars, what would you call it?

Unwed Women

Any additional comments?

If I had a magic wish it would be to have a long lunch with Ann Patchett.

Ann Patchett is the Saint of good writing

Main character’s motives were unfathomable. Besides, I hated her by the end of the book.Very disappointing since I enjoyed Commonwealth By the same author. The reader did a good job with the material, but A good reader isn’t enough.

Good reader, Hated the book

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Yes, I would recommend this book. Ann Patchett is one of my favorite authors. I'll read anything of hers.

Would you recommend The Patron Saint of Liars to your friends? Why or why not?

This is an older Ann Patchett book so I am late getting it read. It is not my favorite book of hers but still well written. The characters stayed with me after I listened to this book.

What does Julia Gibson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She did have good inflection and good tone. That helps when you are listening.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Oh yes. I would see the movie. Good story with some good plot twists!

Detailed story

I was drawn into the story right away and the entire book kept me listening every moment I could. The characters of Sr. Evangeline, Son, & Cecilia ("Sissy") were all engaging, along with Rose's roommate and Lorraine near end of book. I was very glad that Cecelia was growing up to be a sensitive, honest, but smart and perceptual teenager. I appreciated hearing about Son's early life but wondered that he chose to live a solitary life despite having caring parents & sister. Mostly though, I'm frustrated by Rose, who also had a good, loving mother yet she willingly broke her mother's heart. Why could Rose not love anyone? I understand that she married Thomas without loving him and that she left him bec she would never be able to love him nor would she ever be able to explain why she couldn't love him. Granted, the story began in the early 1960's and divorce was not quite so prevalent, but... Then at end of story (SPOILER ALERT!!) just running off again? What the heck??? Something seriously wrong with Rose's functioning!
Another thing that struck me as Rose being downright cruel was when she named her baby Cecilia despite Son's begging her not to. What was that about? I wonder if Rose suffered from some kind of attachment disorder despite loving relationship with her mother. She had no particular girlfriends as a child or teen, didn't like any of the boys she dated. The only two people she seemed to speak honestly to (and we readers were not privy to those conversations) were (briefly) the priest in her hometown church and Sr. Evangeline. She couldn't attach to anybody!

Compelling read and yet....

The story was intriguing in some ways, though it offered very little “payoff” in terms of character development. While I appreciate the concept of switching the point of view on the three protagonists and getting inside each of their brains, I felt very unsatisfied by the end of the book. Perhaps that was Patchett’s intention, but I still didn’t like it. I felt the hurt from each character and how frustrating it was to continually receive the bare minimum from a mother figure.

As far as the narration, I HATED the music. I would imagine this is a remnant of the “book on tape” times of yore, but omg, it was so distracting and not pleasant to listen to.

I adore Ann Patchett, but this was not my favorite

We’ll written but I disliked the main character. Pathetic foolish selfish woman who hurt so many people in her wake.

The story is great until the ending
It could have been better
But letdown - but I still recommend the book

The ending could have been better

This was a wonderful story but it seemed like so much was left unresolved. I'm sure it was intentional but I have so many questions!

How does it end????

I have read and enjoyed some of her other books But this particular book is a sad book with sad characters. One thing that was very strange was occasionally throughout the narration it would stop and then some strange music would come on and then when you got back to the book after the music and it was the exact same spot. it wasn’t like they were transitioning to a new place in the book. It was unbelievably annoying . This was not a book for me

If you like a sad story with sad characters then this is a book for you

Narration was excellent, but I found the musical transitions jarring and disruptive to the flow.
