Eight years before he was elected the 26th president of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt published these detailed recollections of hunting bison, bear, cougar, elk, moose, deer, and other game around the country. This production was undertaken on the 100th anniversary of Roosevelt's death.

Before taking office as the 26th President of the United States of America, Theodore Roosevelt had already made a name for himself as a historian and an adventurer. He became an archetype of the ultra-masculine frontiersman, while still maintaining his image as an intellectual and a scholar. It is perhaps this particular mélange that made him appeal to the American people who would elect him. Learn more about the man with our collection of quotes.

It's understandable that the nature of hunting stories makes them repetitive and often predictable, but there's enough varied prose and thoughtfulness here to keep it engaging. Though for someone who's renowned for their charisma and passion, this work of Roosevelt's can come across dry and humorless as he makes clear to illustrate that his experience and knowledge is well above that of the average frontiersman. With that in mind, the narration is downright monotonous, with a distant, gruff lack of emotion. His voice works well for the subject matter, it just needs to be elevated with variation in delivery, I found myself constantly zoning out and having to replay segments. Still enjoyed this very much, and would certainly recommend.

I love this, especially on long deep hikes. Unlike other reviewers, I genuinely enjoyed the narrator as well.

Wonderful book of wilderness and hunting

After hearing the narrator for the first few seconds I almost turned it off and only kept listening because I wanted to listen to this entire book. I’ve heard him on another audiobook and it is absolutely brutal listening to his idiotic accent and how he tries to portray the readings.

Narrator is horrible

Interesting stories of a different era. Lots of info on the habits of animals and many fascinating adventures. Fairly well read, although slightly jarring to have such classically American material read in a foreign accent. Enjoyed it. Much better read than “Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail”.

Great writing, decently read

It was great to listen to what someone had written a long time ago about how life was and how they survived. It’s a must read or listen and I’ll be listening to more books like this one.
5 stars!

This is from the words of Theodore Roosevelt, our former President. It depicts his hunting campaigns set across the country (and into other areas as he depicts). I did not expect it all to be about hunting, and all the animals he killed (in great detail, mind you). I had heard this from Max Brook's book Devolution, which sources the book for passages about the sasquatch--not mentioned by name in this book. Honestly, I was disappointed that he did not speak of the sasquatch more, but as an afterthought, almost as if he really didn't believe it. He barely spoke of it, though as he said, he could not explain the situation. If you received this book for that purpose, every mention of it is in Devolution.
As far as the rest of the book goes, Teddy Roosevelt depicts America in vivid and colorful detail, from trees, mountains, streams, to almost every animal that roams the regions. Although I am not a hunter myself, I wished I could have gone on one of his adventures! If you're into hunting, I encourage you to listen to this. Teddy may have killed many animals, but he insisted on preserving much of the wilderness, speaking of not killing more than necessary, and respecting nature for what it is.
The narrator read it about as good as I could, if not better. It's a simple read for him, but sometimes I found myself nodding off to his droning voice. He doesn't throw much emotion in the action scenes, but that's okay. I still enjoyed this book.

Fantastic book, really takes you back to a time before the modern sportsman, a time before rules and boundaries. Make you respect the men of that era but thankful of the hunting rules and regulations we have today along with the truly wild places preserved by parks, forest and wilderness.
