Acerca de esta escucha

Since moving to Hollywood at age seventeen, Steve Guttenberg has delighted and moved audiences with his film and television work. But when his father is diagnosed with kidney failure, Steve has to step into a new and wholly unexpected role: caretaker. In Time to Thank, Steve tracks his weekly road trips from Los Angeles to Arizona to care for his father and the ways in which his time on the road affords him the perspective to reflect on his life.

Through the prism of his relationship with his father, Steve recounts his early life in Queens and Long Island; his early career as a rising Hollywood star, trying to find his way with the encouragement of his parents; and the painful and moving work of helping care for an ailing family member at the end of their life. From glamorous Hollywood parties and film sets around the world to the daily process of dialysis in suburban Phoenix, Steve offers his wit, empathy, and signature charm.

This is a book for movie fans, road trip junkies, and anyone who finds themselves doing the hard work of caring for an aging loved one. Steve Guttenberg serves as a uniquely perceptive guide through all these phases of life, with a story that is certain to touch listeners and make sure they know that they're not alone.

Listening to your book at this moment in my life is a divine intervention. I went through a similar treatment journey with one of my heroes, my Gramps, as you did with your Dad. Now, I'm navigating the same journey with my hero, my Dad, as he courageously concludes his battle with Stage 4 prostate cancer. Thank you for sharing your experiences. It has helped me truly understand and appreciate my role as a caregiver as his days with us are coming to an end.

Thank you, Steve!

I loved Steve's story telling about his dad, family, childhood antics, and career moments. His story telling matches his huge happy grin in Police Academy and you can tell he comes by that honestly thanks to his upbringing. His story is so highly relatable and reminds me to never take a moment for granted in our lives or with our family.

This story is like a hug for anyone caring for their parents.

What’s to dislike? You hear the truthful highs and lows and behind the scenes of a loving family. You laugh and cry. You see how hard it is in the end to let someone you love, go. But you have no choice. You greave and mourn. For each, the mourning lasts a different amount of time but even that starts to come to an end. You finally start to live more fully and you realize that it’s been awhile since you’ve been all there. Years later tears can still come but there is more peace and the years of fun memories outweigh the last months of watching someone you love leaving you more everyday until they are gone.

Such a beautiful book. I lost my Dad as a young adult. He was also on dialysis and passed away unexpectedly.
As sad as it was, I throughly enjoyed this book.
Made me miss my Dad even more.

If you read this and don’t cry, laugh, worry about your parents, gain major insight to your own life, past and future, you have no soul. This is a lovingly, crafted experience that I will cherish. Thank you, Steven.

This is a requirement for anyone facing the inevitable loss of a parent.

My father passed away 4 months ago and I was his caregiver. I miss him.

I can relate. I'm 65 and will be facing dialysis in the near future. I'm a husband, dad and grandpa. I am experiencing many of the same feelings that the author and his family went and going through.
