Just as their romance deepens, Pietro must leave again for work in the coal mines of America. Nina is torn between joining him and her commitment to Italy and her mother. As Mussolini’s Fascists throw the country into chaos and Hitler’s Nazis terrorize their town, each day becomes a struggle to survive greater atrocities. A future with Pietro seems impossible when they lose contact and Nina’s dreams of a life together are threatened by Nazi occupation and an enemy she must face alone.

so much of this book was reminiscent of my own grandparents who were separated after marriage when my Grandfather went to America to save and finally bring his family for a better life and opportunity in America. love the book.

Great story. Narrator was not bad, a little awkward at first getting used to accent switching. I wish more was written about the end of the book. It seemed like it was building up to more. Still good though.

An epic story spanning before and after WWII. Written from the perspective of many women with the overall theme of love, strength, faith as well as relationships between a mother and daughter(s).

Ever since I married my husband whose mother was an Italian teenager during WWII, I have been devouring books about what it was like to live in Italy during the war. She passed away before we married, so I was never able to talk to her about her experiences. He son, my husband and her only child, was too afraid to ask too many questions. His father died in a post war accident shortly before he was born. The two of them moved to USA in 1955. What little he told me, intrigued me to read books like this.

Enjoyed the historical context. Characters and storyline was intriguing without being predictable. A sequel with later descendants of Lazia would make a fantastic follow-up.

Relatable for Italian American Descendants

The story possibly could have gone more in depth, more vividly into some local cultures. At first I found the reader’s accent to be annoyingly wrong, but I eventually got used to it. I’m not sure about the boat leaving from Genoa, but many of the other boats came across with mostly people from the same region & country, rather than from many other countries.
