Acerca de esta escucha

From domestic war to barroom brawls, grad-student-turned-PI Neal Carey’s got more than studying on his plate.

Neal’s three-year confinement in a Chinese monastery is finally over—but his troubles are just beginning. The elusive financial benefactors who have bought his freedom expect a return on their investment. They want him to find Cody McCall, a two-year-old boy recently abducted by his father in a bitter Hollywood custody battle—a task that will propel Neal from the glittering Hollywood hills to the remote wilds of Nevada.

To find Cody, Neal has to turn outlaw in a land of two-bit casinos and roadside cathouses to infiltrate a vicious white supremacist group spouting hatred and dealing in terror. But the deeper undercover he goes, the deadlier the game becomes. Now Neal must force a showdown with the group’s crazed leader and find Cody before the missing toddler ends up lost in a world of unspeakable evil.

I enjoyed this one (only my second, i think skipped one?) Anyway, i'll probably try another.

Good story and characters

After the disappointment of the awfully befuddled (and tedious) Buddha's Mirror, Don Winslow (and Neal Carey) come back with a white knuckle thriller, that rockets to a dazzler of an ending. Job well done -- I couldn't put it down!

Winslow Back in Fighting Form!

I thought the first one was decent enough, but the second one really dragged. This one had a much better pace and an element of suspense that the other two lacked. The characters that you’ve come to know already are by now three dimensional and endearing, and the new characters are interesting enough. This would have been a good ending to the series, but I’m interested to see where they go with the next two

The best one so far

Relatively speaking about this series – just another one of Winslow’s complicated, sometimes terrifying, sometimes witty , always entertaining tales.

Neal Carey Series review

This was originally published in 1993 and I would have been hard pressed back then to believe that there are people who think like this. Fast forward to 2023, and it is not so unfathomable now to realize that there are racist people (while calling themselves Christians) like this in the US.

The story picks up where book 2 ended, so I would recommend reading this series in order. It's not absolutely necessary but the start will make more sense. In this book, I liked that Graham and Ed were actually "on the ground" with Neal in part of the story. Although I do find it interesting that Ed and Graham always seem to leave Neal hanging in the wind while they miraculously end up safely back on the east coast. You would think for all the money they have invested in him they would also try to get him back there too.

It's ironic that in book 2 and 3 Neal is touted as being great at his job, yet he always seems to get into precarious situations. Part of that is due to Ed not always providing Neal with all of the information. However, Neal does tend to make some rash decisions which place him in danger. Overall, though, Neal makes a good protagonist. And like most novels in this genre, you do have to overlook some things that just aren't believable.

As for the narrator, I think with each book the narrator has become more consistent with each main character's voice. Although I don't really like the voice of Graham, it does seem to work for Graham's wise cracks.

Narration is clear, engaging, and compels interest. Narrator does superb job of throwing voice concomitant with different characters.

Story is not fresh but is well done and fun.

Fun installment in this series

I'm starting to look for novels narrated by Joe Barrett, he's that good! Suspenseful, funny, sometimes gruesome this book was a thoroughly enjoyable story!

Another great story!

A short, bumpy but not impossible start got the hero back from the end of book 2. I liked the consistent characters from the “Friends and Family” bunch. I also liked the love interest, the Steve Mills transition from incidental to heroic and the very satisfactory end of the story.
All in all, a time well spent.

Winslow scores another great yarn
