The macabre murder of a prominent nobleman throws an already unsettled London into chaos in this electrifying new historical mystery by the USA Today bestselling author of What Cannot Be Said.

August 1816. England is in the grip of what will become known as the Year Without a Summer. Facing the twin crises of a harvest-destroying volcanic winter and the economic disruption caused by the end of the Napoleonic Wars, the British monarchy finds itself haunted by the looming threat of bloody riots not seen since the earliest days of the French Revolution. Amidst the turmoil, a dead man is found hanging upside down by one leg in an abandoned chapel, his hands tied behind his back. The pose eerily echoes the image depicted on a tarot card known as Le Pendu, the Hanged Man. The victim—Lord Preston Farnsworth, the younger brother of one of the Regent’s boon companions—was a passionate crusader against what he called the forces of darkness, namely criminality, immorality, and sloth. His brutal murder shocks the Palace and panics the already troubled populace.

Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, learns of the murder from a ragged orphan who leads him to the corpse and then disappears. At first, everyone in the dead man’s orbit paints Lord Preston as a selfless saint. But Sebastian quickly realizes that the man had accumulated more than his fair share of enemies, including Major Hugh Chandler, a close friend of Sebastian’s who once saved his life. Sebastian also discovers that the pious Lord Preston may have been much more dangerous than those he sought to redeem.

As dark clouds press down on the city and the rains fall unceasingly, two more victims are found, one strangled and one shot, with ominous tarot cards placed on their bodies. The killer is sending a gruesome message and Sebastian is running out of time to decipher it before more lives are lost and a fraught post-war London explodes.

The narrator was ok, I say that because some the voices he did were on the mark while others, such as Hero, Lord Jarvis and even Sebastián were either to high an octave or just flat. But it was still worth the credit.

Still enjoyed the story.

The story gives the new narrator a fair chance to give the listeners a new sound for all the characters. The stories are usually so good that the listeners can adjust to the changes but I really do like this new voice. The story avoids the full range of the usual characters in a full challenge to our memory and understanding of some characters. It could be just the story but C S. Harris seems to care for her stories and the listeners. We have had made complaints and this narrator seems to change the expectations by simply changing gender voice and the comparisons are moot.. Very good story as always and if I am right about the author's concern for the listeners comfort- thank you.

I really like the new narrator

Loved it! Who is after Hero and will Sebastian meet his Father? Loved this story.

Do I have questions?

I am always happy seeing a new addition to this mystery series. But first, I loved the narrator, Mr. Kiteley who has a rather soothing voice (I loved the other narrators too, all of them have been fantastic) and has that quality that keeps me wanting to listen. He did a good job of varying the voices of the various characters. Before looking at who the narrator was, I swore he sounded just like one of my favorite Doctor Who actors - Paul McGann - or similar enough, I mistook him for the other actor briefly. He brings his own dimensional depth to the story.

The newest novel in the Sebastian St. Cyr series has not disappointed me. I love all the historical background woven into the story and the small history lecture at the end of the book. It also had me guessing just about to the end who the culprit (s) were. Though one of them really did surprise me.

All I can say is Keep 'em' coming! :)

I am so happy that the powers who decide these things finally realized that Sebastian is a MALE and cast a Male narrator. I have waited so long for this. And the narrator they chose is outstanding! If they let Tom Kiteley re-narrate the entire series, I'll buy every one of them, though it may take a few years. The story, as always, is excellent. This is in the top 3 series for me, and I read and listen a lot. I have over 2,500 books on Audible. Please have Tom narrate all the rest of the books to come in this series. Stay healthy Tom!

Narrator is extraordinary & one of top five I’ve heard in 20+ yrs of listening to audiobooks. Loved the storyline & characters, too!

I always enjoy these books. The narrator did a good job, but I really miss Davina Porter!

I'm not a fan of narrators changing in a series, but Tom Kiteley did a good job. I hated to see Davina Porter leave the series. However, Kitely does a good job of bringing the story to life. In my opinion, his voice is better suited to the character.

This is the twentieth book in the Sebastian St. Cyr mystery series, and once again, Harris delivers a gripping, emotionally layered story. Set in Regency England during 1816—the infamous “year without a summer”—the book opens with a poor orphaned boy seeking out Sebastian to report a gruesome murder in an abandoned church. The victim, a member of the aristocracy, is found hanged in the style of the tarot card Le Pendu. As Sebastian investigates, he's haunted by the possibility that the killer may be someone he knows and trusts.

One of my favorite things about this series is how Harris weaves rich historical detail into the mystery. I had never heard of the “year without a summer” before reading this, and I found myself diving into research about the era. Harris also sheds light on the harsh realities faced by the poor—especially children—as the Napoleonic Wars come to an end.

The story is gripping, at times scary and sad, and always emotionally compelling. I continue to love the cast of recurring characters, both the heroes and the villains. Hero, Sebastian’s wife, is once again a strong and vital partner in the investigation. I was a little disappointed that Hendon didn’t appear in this book, and I missed seeing more of Gibson. I’m still hoping Jarvis wakes up to the truth about his wife and realizes his wife isn’t as trustworthy as he believes. I envision this as a major confrontation.

It’s hard knowing I’ll have to wait another year for the next installment—but I’ll be counting down the days.

I love this series

I was so upset when Davina Porter retired. She’s how I found this series. This narrator rocks socks. I was disappointed to find out he’s brand new and doesn’t have a hundred books for me to listen too. I can’t wait for more from this series and this narrator. The story seemed a little more chill than the others, not all the characters were as involved as they normally are, but it was still good.

Love this series

The new narrator gave the characters different personalities and made the book seem like it was written by a different author. I realize after 20+ books in the series, time may have necessitated this change. I did not care for the smirk in Lovejoy's voice, this character has been so solemn throughout the entire series, seemed like a different character. I still gave it all 5 ratings because I enjoyed the story and didn't want my prejudices to tarnish anyone, it was just different is all.
