The chapter on secondary benefits was eye-opening. I realized how many people I know who rely heavily on the sympathy they get from being ill such that they are unable to separate the illness from their identity. We need much more awareness around this issue, so I’m glad the author shed light on it.
The checklist of questions to ask about every new prescription added to your medical file is pure gold. It includes so many questions I would never have thought to ask, and I consider myself a major self-advocate. Also, the advice to not self-diagnose was something I really needed to hear because I do that all the time. I think I'm being helpful, so it was interesting to hear that it could be perceived as me thinking I know more than my doctor.
There are bite-sized nuggets of wisdom scattered throughout this book, too. I would never have thought about not showing up to your appointment in a full face of makeup, covering up your sallow skin tone and under-eye circles, lest your concerns not be taken seriously. I want to think this sort of thing doesn't happen, but in a comprehensive tome about taking control of your health narrative, these tips are important!
All in all, I'm far more empowered to advocate on my own behalf after reading this book, and I'll be sharing it with everyone in my family who battles a chronic condition.
An eye-opening and empowering book!
