    Life’s Not a Competition

“Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am making my way someone else steps down ahead of me." - John 5:7

This story is as much about how wrong assumptions and negative comparisons keep as stuck as it is about a supernatural healing.

The man assumed that he had to be first into the waters when the angel stirred them in order to be healed.

The oldest versions of this manuscript were hand written. At some point a transcriber assumed the man was correct and added verse four which included this assumption. This is likely not in the original version of the story.

Jesus challenged the man’s assumptions. The man thought he had to be faster and better than someone else to be healed. Jesus told him to focus on himself and get up. And the man did.

Life’s not a competition. It’s not about running faster than everyone else. It’s about running our personal best.

Finding Peace by Asking, Seeking, and Trusting

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.” - John 14:27

Peace… After developing the ability to love and the capacity and willingness to forgive, I believe having peace may be the most important spiritual gift.

How do we find peace when we have bills to pay and insufficient income? How do we find peace when we have health challenges, when there are problems in our relationships, when our parents and or children are struggling and we feel powerless to help?

How do we untrouble our hearts and stop being afraid? How do we find this peace that Jesus promised to send through the Holy Spirit. I believe that we have to ask, seek, and trust.

We ask God for peace. We can stop pretending everything is ok when it isn’t. We name and acknowledge our cares place them on the alter everyday as needed.

We seek peace. We actively surround ourselves with people who love and nurture us. We seek out the environments and supports- including therapy, medication if necessary, and meditation that facilitate peace.

We trust that the shepherd will lead us through the dark valleys in which we find ourselves and bring us table that is being prepared for us.

    Every Day Sacred, Everywhere Holy

“I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb.”- Revelation 21:22

We build or churches, and temples, and mosques… We set aside certain days and times… We keep our customs and traditions and perform our rituals in order to help us experience the sacred, in order to help us experience divine transcendent presence.

Too often we live the rest of our lives wholly disconnected from the holy. We live our everyday lives both profanely and mundanely. We live our everyday lives as if God doesn’t exist, or if God does, God is a long way away.

The vision of Revelation is one in which humanity becomes aware of God’s immanence, of Emmanuel, God with us. In this vision every day is a holy day, everywhere is a sacred place. God is not out there somewhere.

Instead we live our lives aware of and connected to God and each other, as we live and move and have our being in God. (Acts 17:28)
