“A French Teenager in the Resistance” with Nicole Spangenberg

  • Resumen

  • This episode is brought to you by the Museum’s Jenny Craig Institute for the Study of War and Democracy.

At our 15th International Conference in 2022, we had the privilege to hear from Nicole Spangenberg in conversation with the Institute’s Senior Historian, Dr. Steph Hinnershitz.

Nicole, as a teenager working with the French Resistance, assisted with daring missions to aid her country in the struggle against Nazi occupation. From delivering supplies and messages for her local resistance network to providing aid to wounded partisans, Nicole’s work is an important reminder of the crucial role women played in the fight against fascism.

great stories, but with weird&unrelated messages

the woman tells some very important and interesting stories about her & another woman's experience in France during nazi germany's occupation period.
the audio seems to be recorded in an auditorium with a live audience. subsequently, there is a large amount of backround noise - with one person periodically coughing/clearing their throat - which makes it difficult to focus on the speaker's words.
the woman does have a tendancy to double back or skip forward/backward in the story, and it is a bit difficult to follow at some points.
these are all quite minor concerns; however i would like to note a larger issue i have with this episode: it seems to have an unhealthy and unnecessary focus on the fact that the speaker is female, almost more than the focus on her actual story. i would like to preface this by saying that i am not a woman, and potentially this is not my place to speak on this, but i feel like hyperfocusing on the fact of her gender is almost undermining her accomplishments. her story is important and her being a woman doesnt make what she did more or less impressive because the story has nothing to do with that.
another strong concern is the mention that god needs to be "brought back into schools," because that is inherently against the freedom of religion clause, AND entirely unrelated.
