  • 133 - Is It Just Picky Eating... Or Something More? with paediatric OT Rachael Smith
    Jul 8 2025

Most toddlers go through a phase of picky or particular eating, but how do you know if it’s “just a phase” or something more? If you’ve ever felt confused, frustrated, or unsure about what’s normal when it comes to your child’s eating habits, this conversation is for you.

In this episode, we’re joined again by our much-loved OT Rachael Smith to explore what picky eating really looks like, when it might be a sign of something more serious (like a feeding disorder), and what support is available for families who are struggling.

For those who don’t know Rach, she is a mum to her daughter Olive and son Teddy, a Paediatric Occupational Therapist, and the owner of Therapy Time, a private practice based in Brisbane.

Even before having her own family, she has always been passionate about taking a big picture approach to child development. Rach strongly believes that what we eat has a huge impact on everything and sees this everyday in her clinical practice (and at home).

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • What’s considered “normal” picky eating vs a feeding problem
    • Why so many toddlers go through fussy eating phases
    • The signs of a problem feeder (and when to seek help)
    • Oral motor vs sensory feeding challenges — and how to tell the difference
    • Why stress and mealtime dynamics can make things worse
    • The impact of feeding difficulties on growth and nutrition
    • Who to see and where to start if you’re feeling worried
    • Why you don’t need a diagnosis to get support
    • How a feeding team (OT, speech, dietitian) can help
    • and so much more!

  • 132 - Tongue Ties: What They Are, What They Mean, and What To Do Next with paediatric Speech Pathologist Emily Tyler
    Jul 1 2025

Tongue ties are one of the most asked-about topics in the Boob to Food community and also one of the most confusing. From conflicting advice to the debate around diagnosis and treatment, many parents are left wondering: Does my baby have a tongue tie? And if so, what should I do?

In this episode, we’re joined by Emily Tyler, speech pathologist and founder of Chomp & Chat, to unpack the nuance and offer clear, compassionate guidance. Whether your child has been diagnosed, you’re noticing feeding challenges, or you’re simply curious about how tongue ties may (or may not) impact speech, feeding and development, this one's for you.

Emily Tyler is a paediatric speech pathologist and the founder of Chomp & Chat, a clinic dedicated to supporting children and families through early feeding and communication challenges. With a calm, evidence-informed approach, Emily works closely with families to assess both the structure and function of feeding and speech, always centring the individual child’s needs. She is also a mum of three, including twins, and brings both professional expertise and lived experience to the conversation.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • What a tongue tie actually is
    • How common tongue ties are and why prevalence is debated
    • Signs of feeding difficulties that might be related to ties
    • How tongue ties can affect bottle feeding, breastfeeding, and solids
    • Whether tongue ties impact speech development
    • How to know if a tie needs to be revised
    • The importance of looking at both structure and function
    • Why tongue ties are such a polarising topic and how to make an informed decision
    • ... and so much more!

  • 131 - Gestational Diabetes: What It Is, What to Do, and How to Feel Empowered with Prenatal Dietitian Niki Mohtat
    Jun 24 2025

Gestational diabetes (GDM) can feel overwhelming, and for many women, it comes with confusion, fear, or guilt. But a diagnosis doesn’t mean you’ve done anything wrong, and it certainly doesn’t mean you’re powerless.

In this episode, we’re joined by Boob to Food clinic dietitian and nutritionist Niki Mohtat to explore what GDM actually is, why it happens, and how you can manage it with confidence through nourishing food, supportive lifestyle tweaks, and the right guidance.

Niki Mohtat is a dietitian and nutritionist with a passion for supporting women through preconception, pregnancy, and postpartum. Her interest in prenatal nutrition began with her own pregnancies, where she saw firsthand how much of the information available to the public was outdated or unhelpful. This inspired her to dedicate her career to providing evidence-based, individualised, and practical nutrition guidance, so women can feel confident nourishing themselves and their growing baby. Niki has completed advanced training through The Institute for Prenatal Nutrition Mentorship Program under Lily Nichols, a highly sought-after and competitive prenatal certification program. She offers consultations through the Boob to Food online clinic.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • What gestational diabetes really is and why it happens during pregnancy
    • What the oral glucose tolerance test involves and its limitations
    • How to approach food without fear, guilt, or perfectionism
    • The role of protein, fats, and carbs (and why carbs aren’t the enemy)
    • Tips for managing fasting blood glucose levels
    • The connection between GDM and future health risks
    • Simple strategies for postpartum and long-term wellbeing
    • ... and so much more

Love this podcast! Super informative and provides lots of information and perspective for me to consider and feel good about the choices I make for my family. Because it’s conversational and interviews it feels like some adult conversation in my ear when I spend all day with a baby! Also I’m in the US so it’s fun to learn Australian slang.
