Lately, I’ve been hooked on this Chinese song called 只为碎银几两 (zhǐ wèi suì yín jǐ liǎng). There’s a line that repeats like a mantra: “看世人慌慌张张，却只为碎银几两。偏偏这碎银几两，能解这世人慌张。” Roughly, it means: “People worry for bits of silver, yet those bits soothe their worry. ” I mean, how poetic is that? It’s like the songwriter bottled up humanity’s eternal dilemma into four lines. And it also got me spiraling into this ancient debate: Can money actually buy happiness?
