Derek Mawhinney is a successful business owner and property investor from Dundee, however as a youngster he was always the kid that was told from school teachers and peers that he wouldn't amount to anything in his future. Derek suffered from dyslexia throughout his life, making the education system challenging and disengaging.
Derek grew up in multiple houses over the years, mainly in areas of high deprivation and low socioeconomic status. Derek was raised in a single parent household with no relationship with his birth father however he had an amazing strong relationship and bond with his mother. Throughout his life, Derek fully admits to having a big chip on his shoulder to prove people wrong in their opinions of him. At the age of 19 Dereks mum passed away leaving him with few options other than to start up his own business to survive.
In this episode, Derek talks about how he started his own roofing company and has continually invested into his non traditional education in order to be on the route to success and fulfilment. He describes the days leading up to and directly after the most pivotal part in his life- when his mother passed away at such a young age.
Derek also talks about the strategies he's used in order to develop both himself and his business where he now manages a multi-million pound property investment fund which focuses on regeneration areas in the UK.
