Still recovering from wounds suffered during the defense of Maraisfontaine, young Allen has to cope with a wealthy suitor coming between himself and Marie. Marie's father, having lost all his livestock, and therefore most of his wealth, in the raid, sees his only future coming from a marriage between his daughter and the young man, who is arrogant and condescending to Allen.
