Ordinary Observations is the radio equivalent of knowing enough to know you’re wrong, but knowing too little to care about the details. It gives enough for a passing grade and leaves room to figure out the rest along the way. Join hosts Mark and Jack as they discuss a bizarre potpourri of ideas, occurrences, personalities, and problems from all imaginable corners of the globe, across all of recorded history. May 21 2025

This week on Ordinary Observations Jack is joined by long time friend of the show Victor, a Swedish man who has seen a moose before. We spend the hour asking some heavy hitting questions like what do moose eat, where do moose like to live, how does a moose find love, and what should moose be afraid of? We discuss the rising popularity of Den Stora Älgvandringen (The Great Moose Walk) from Swedish public broadcaster SVT. We recount New Zealand's misguided moose introduction, and ask ourselves could the Fiordland Moose really have survived to the present day? All this and a whole lotta laughs, this time on Ordinary Observations as part of K103 Live Day.

  • Papal Misbehaviour
    May 14 2025

Join Jack this week on Ordinary Observations for a sprawling discussion on a select few terrible popes. We start off with Pope Stephen XI, a man so incensed at his dead predecessor's actions, he had his corpse exhumed and put on trial, in what would come to be known as the Cadaver Synod. Next we have a long hard look at some of the behaviour of Pope John XII, who was elected Pope as a teenager and promptly turned the holy residence into an orgy of drinking, gambling, and extra-marital sex. Finally we turn to Pope Benedict IX, famed for being the only pope to serve three separate pontificates. Unfortunately, all of which would be marred in controversy, not least of all selling the Papacy. Listen in for these juicy details and more, this week on Ordinary Observations.

    Apr 15 2025

Mark & Jack once again join in on K103 Live Day, this time to put some Ordinary Observationism on the time-honoured, yet in-vogue hobby of running great distances in terrible conditions. Mark pulls the starting trigger with Marathon Des Sables, the 7 day long, 250+ km epic adventure race through the Sahara Desert in Southern Morocco. Jack registers a hearty DNF in the 1904 Olympic Marathon in St Louis. Terribly organised but featuring an array of colourful characters, this marathon has gone down as one of the most bizarre events in sporting history. Mark struggles to comprehend the mental fortitude displayed by Austrian man Rainer Predl, who ran 70 km in laps around his kitchen table. And we contemplate the horror of running 200 miles underground, in the darkness with only your own thoughts and 39 other sweaty ultra marathon runners. All this and a whole lotta laughs, this time on Ordinary Observations.
