The San Diego Padres got some big, clutch hits from their superstars and just enough great pitching to hang on and pull out the 4-3 win that gave them a 2-2 split in this 4-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado each hit a solo home run, Xander Bogaerts added an RBI double, Gavin Sheets went 3-3 and Jose Iglesias added 2 hits for San Diego, as the Pads moved back to within 5.5 games of the LA Dodgers and just a half game behind the San Francisco Giants in the NL West race.

Adrian Morejon (7-3) picked up the win with 1.2 scoreless innings in relief of starter Randy Vasquez, who allowed 2 runs on 5 hits in 4.1 innings. Jeremiah Estrada worked a scoreless 8th, and closer Robert Suarez pitched the 9th to pick up his 27th save after Jason Adam gave up a run in the 7th to let the D'Backs get to within 4-3.

Machado went 3-5, Tatis went 2-4 with a walk, Sheets went 3-3 with a walk, Iglesias went 2-4 for the Padres, who still went just 2-12 with runners in scoring position and left 7 runners on base.

The Padres welcome in the NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies tomorrow night to kick off a 3-game series to wrap things up before the All-Star break, with 1st pitch set for 6:40pm PT to start the series.

Ryan Bergert (1-0, 2.67 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for the Padres against Ranger Suarez (7-3, 1.99) for the Phillies.
